Whose feet will you wash?

Today begins the holiest time of year for Catholics around the world—the Triduum. Holy Thursday is a day and evening of wonderful readings and preparation for what is to come. Making the time to attend Church each day one truly enters into the gifts Christ offers us. For our Sisters, Holy Thursday Mass begins with the receiving of the Holy Oils, having been blessed by our Bishop, and includes the very special ritual of the washing of the feet. This is to recall how Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. 

For us, our Congregation Leaders wash the feet of several elder Sisters. I remember how powerful it was the first time I witnessed this: to see some of our women’s feet, who had trod many miles, the humbleness of our prioress and our general council on their knees in front of them, gently washing their feet and holding them in reverence. 

I smile as I watch and think of Peter insisting that maybe he needs his head and hands washed too.  Jesus reminds us that we need to wash each other’s feet, or, in today’s world, perhaps we should consider it as a way to be present for one another and care for each other in times of need. Our world certainly can use whatever care we can give it.

¿A quién le lavarás los pies?

Hoy comienza la época más sagrada del año para los Católicos de todo el mundo: el Triduo. El Jueves Santo es un día y una noche de lecturas maravillosas y preparación para lo que está por venir. Al dedicar tiempo a la Iglesia cada día, uno realmente entra en los dones que Cristo nos ofrece. Para nuestras Hermanas, la Misa del Jueves Santo comienza con la recepción de los Santos Óleos, bendecidos por nuestro Obispo, e incluye el ritual tan especial del lavatorio de pies. Esto es para recordar cómo Jesús lavó los pies a sus discípulos.

Para nosotras, nuestras Líderes de Congregación lavan los pies de varias Hermanas Mayores. Recuerdo lo conmovedor que fue la primera vez que presencié esto: ver los pies de algunas de nuestras mujeres, que habían recorrido muchas millas, la humildad de nuestra priora y nuestro consejo general de rodillas ante ellas, lavándoles los pies con delicadeza y mostrándoles reverencia.

Sonrío al observar y pienso en Pedro insistiendo en que quizás él también necesita que le laven la cabeza y las manos. Jesús nos recuerda que debemos lavarnos los pies unos a otros, o, en el mundo actual, quizás deberíamos considerarlo como una forma de estar presentes y cuidarnos mutuamente en momentos de necesidad. Nuestro mundo sin duda necesita cualquier tipo de cuidado que podamos darle.

Lent: Give up or Give to?

I remember when I was a little girl, my granny would always ask me what I was giving up for Lent. It would always be treats of some kind. Lent equaled sacrifice of a physical nature to me. When I got older, I realized that the sacrifice God was asking for was more than giving up chocolate or my favorite soft drink. It was not so much the giving up of something but putting something more important in its place. One of my favorite Lenten practices is to give up watching television in the evening to spend more time in prayer, and I make time to volunteer for something in my community, such as passing out meals or taking someone to the store who does not drive. It is amazing to me just how much free time I have.

As I was discerning religious life, I developed a lovely prayer routine that alternated between scripture reading and reflection and walking prayer in nature. My serious discernment began in Lent. The special time of Lent allowed me to spend more time listening and talking to God to determine where I was being called. I likened it to Jesus spending 40 days in the desert, there was even temptation – to not follow through on my commitments. When the Triduum time came, I was confident that God was calling me to dedicate my life in a special way, as an Adrian Dominican Sister. 

Lent is a wonderful time to deepen your relationship with God and seek out what you are being called to. How will you use the special time of Lent? Will you give up or give to?

Cuaresma: ¿Renunciar o Dar ?

Recuerdo que de pequeña, mi abuela siempre me preguntaba a qué renunciaba en Cuaresma. Siempre eran golosinas. Para mí, la Cuaresma significaba sacrificio físico. Al crecer, me di cuenta de que el sacrificio que Dios me pedía era más que renunciar al chocolate o a mi refresco favorito. No se trataba tanto de renunciar a algo, sino de poner algo más importante en su lugar. Una de mis prácticas favoritas de Cuaresma es dejar de ver la televisión por la noche para dedicar más tiempo a la oración, y me dedico a dar mi tiempo como voluntaria en mi comunidad, como repartir comida o llevar a alguien a la tienda que no maneja. Me sorprende la cantidad de tiempo libre que tengo.

Mientras discernía mi vida religiosa, desarrollé una hermosa rutina de oración que alternaba entre la lectura y la reflexión de las Escrituras y la oración caminando en la naturaleza. Mi profundo discernimiento comenzó en Cuaresma. Este tiempo especial de Cuaresma me permitió dedicar más tiempo a escuchar y hablar con Dios para determinar a dónde me llamaba. Lo comparé con los 40 días que Jesús pasó en el desierto; incluso sentí la tentación – de no cumplir con mis compromisos. Cuando llegó el Triduo, tuve la certeza de que Dios me llamaba a dedicar mi vida de una manera especial, como Hermana Domínica de Adrian.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo maravilloso para profundizar su relación con Dios y descubrir a qué es llamada. ¿Cómo usará su tiempo especial de Cuaresma? ¿Renunciará o dará?
