Take a Leap

“They left everything and followed him.” We hear these words in a story from the Gospel of Luke. The local fishermen were having a bad night. They fished all night and returned with nothing in their boats. Jesus joined them at the shore of the lake the next day and told them to try again. He directed them where to throw their nets, and sure enough, they had a super catch. The boats were nearly sinking! I enjoy this story as one of those holy surprises. Jesus instructs the seasoned fisherman to try it one more time.

Has that happened to you? You are doing your daily tasks, your regular job, your usual activity, but seem to be losing track and getting nowhere. Then something nudges you to give it another try. You have that little push of inspiration to try another scenario to solve your situation, and, lo and behold, it works!

When this happens to me, when I seem to get stalled in a project or process in my teaching or preparation for a ministry task, I, like those fishermen, have to stop and listen to a new idea. If your vocation pathway seems stalled and you’re unsure whether to continue moving forward, don’t get discouraged. Step back. Listen to another idea that can come from something you read, someone you talk with, or simply a new thought you have in your prayer or reflection. 

Our walk with God is usually inspired by the stories of Jesus and his disciples, his followers. Those fishermen were so impressed by their super catch and the way Jesus inspired them that they left their comfort zone and followed him. They were unsure where it would take them, but they trusted what they saw. Take the leap! It may mean stepping out of the ordinary way and finding a surprising new catch or new path on your journey.

“Lo dejaron todo y lo siguieron”. Escuchamos estas palabras en una historia del Evangelio de Lucas. Los pescadores locales tuvieron una mala noche. Pescaron toda la noche y regresaron sin nada en sus barcas. Jesús se reunió con ellos en la orilla del lago al día siguiente y les dijo que lo intentaran de nuevo. Les indicó dónde tirar las redes, y efectivamente, tuvieron una pesca estupenda. ¡Las barcas casi se hundían! Disfruto de esta historia como una de esas santas sorpresas. Jesús le dice al pescador experimentado que lo intente una vez más.

¿Le ha pasado? Está haciendo sus tareas diarias, su trabajo habitual, su actividad habitual, pero parece que pierde el hilo y no llega a nada. De repente, algo le impulsa a intentarlo de nuevo. Siente ese pequeño empujón de inspiración para probar otra situación y, ¡sorpresa!, ¡funciona!

Cuando esto me sucede, cuando parece que me estanco en un proyecto o proceso de enseñanza o en la preparación para una tarea ministerial, yo, como aquellos pescadores, tengo que detenerme y escuchar una nueva idea. Si su camino vocacional parece estancado y no está segura de si seguir adelante, no se desanime. De un paso atrás. Escuche otra idea que puede surgir de algo que lea, de alguien con quien hable o simplemente de un nuevo pensamiento que tenga en su oración o reflexión.

Nuestro caminar con Dios suele inspirarse en las historias de Jesús y sus discípulos. Aquellos pescadores quedaron tan impresionados por su extraordinaria pesca y la forma en que Jesús los inspiró, que dejaron su zona de confort y lo siguieron. No estaban seguros de adónde los llevaría, pero confiaron en lo que vieron. ¡Anímese! Puede significar salir de lo común y encontrar una nueva pesca sorprendente o un nuevo camino en su jornada.
