Switchback Trails and Rest Stops
Over the years of summer vacations and retreats, at one time, the mountains of northwest Canada offered an invitation for a wilderness retreat. As a city person, the wilderness was not usually a place of comfort or interest to me, but a friend invited me, and I took the leap!
Our days were centered around breakfast and morning prayer with the group, then we were on our own until dinner time. We were reminded to follow the mapped trails, have a companion, bring water, a lunch snack, and be back in time. Sending the Park Rangers to find a lost party was very expensive!
As my friend and I followed the trails, they offered different kinds of walking. Direct routes were pretty simple, slightly rising as we walked comfortably; they gave us time to talk about our vocation journey and call to service as Dominican sisters and teachers. Then the trails got a little more difficult. Walking up the sides of the mountain on the switchback trails was a different experience and required more attention to our stepping and pace. A more narrow way was provided. This required concentration and some rest stops as we reviewed the route and continued carefully.
Much like our vocation journey, the switchback trails and the rest stops invite us to review and renew our call to the mission of Jesus in our day and our time. We read in the Gospels of the ways in which Jesus invited his followers to leave their familiar ways and follow him in his new way of proclaiming the kingdom of God. The early disciples may have felt like they were on some switchback trails and had to seek a few rest stops along the way.
Vocation discernment may feel like that sometimes as well. The smooth trails accompanied by prayer and companions bring some comfort and encouragement, but the switchback trails may be the very invitation the Lord is offering you to be attentive to your footsteps. Perhaps these more careful steps will bring you closer to a decision to follow your call to a vocation for religious life and ministry in the Church. There will be companions and rest stops along the way. Keep your backpack ready and stay on the trail.

Senderos con curvas cerradas y áreas de descanso
A lo largo de los años, durante mis vacaciones de verano y mis retiros, en ocasión las montañas del noroeste de Canadá me invitaron a una escapada a la naturaleza. Como persona de ciudad, por lo regular, la naturaleza no era un lugar de confort ni de interés para mí, ¡pero un amigo me invitó y me lancé a la aventura!
Nuestros días empezaban con desayuno y la oración matutina con el grupo; después, cada una tenía su propio espacio hasta la hora de la cena. Nos recordaban a seguir los caminos señalizados, ir acompañadas, llevar agua, un refrigerio para el almuerzo y regresar a tiempo. ¡Enviar a los guardaparques a buscar a un grupo perdido era muy caro!
Mientras mi amiga y yo seguíamos los caminos, nos encontramos con diferentes tipos de caminata. Las rutas directas eran bastante sencillas, con una ligera pendiente que nos permitía caminar cómodamente y nos daba tiempo para hablar sobre nuestra vocación y nuestro llamado al servicio como hermanas Domínicas y maestras. Luego, los caminos se volvían un poco más difíciles. Caminar por las laderas de la montaña fue una experiencia distinta y requirió mayor atención a nuestros pasos y ritmo. Se nos ofreció un camino más estrecho. Esto exigió concentración y algunas paradas para descansar mientras revisábamos la ruta y continuábamos con cuidado.
Al igual que en nuestro camino vocacional, los senderos sinuosos y las paradas de descanso nos invitan a reflexionar y renovar nuestro llamado a la misión de Jesús en nuestros días y en nuestro tiempo. Leemos en los Evangelios cómo Jesús invitó a sus seguidores a dejar atrás sus costumbres y seguirlo en su nueva forma de proclamar el reino de Dios. Los primeros discípulos tal vez sintieron que estaban en senderos sinuosos y tuvieron que buscar algunos lugares de descanso en el camino.
El discernimiento vocacional a veces también puede sentirse así. Los caminos fáciles, acompañados por la oración y compañeras, brinden consuelo y aliento, pero los caminos sinuosos pueden ser la invitación del Señor a prestar atención a cada paso. Quizás estos pasos más cuidadosos la acerquen a la decisión de seguir su llamado a la vida religiosa y al ministerio en la Iglesia. Habrá compañeras y lugares de descanso en el camino. Mantenga su mochila lista y siga adelante.
