Remind People of These Things
Sometimes we forget. We forget what we intend to do. We forget why we set out on a certain course. We forget some basic decisions that led us to where we are today, but then, we remember! How do we remember? Someone or some incident has reminded us.
The followers of Jesus in the first century of the Christian way also forgot a few things. They forgot how Jesus taught them to care for one another, to look after the stranger, to give to those who needed food or shelter. They got caught up in their own ways and forgot the basic message of care for the community and concern for others. Their leaders realized that they had to remind them more than once what this new way of life meant for them and for their local communities. It is the same for us.
We need reminders, and we also need the discipline to step back and remember our call of service in ministry, our call to care for the community, and our call to listen to the cries of others in need.
Vocation discernment carries these moments of forgetting and remembering and is embraced by the simple message of love that Jesus gives us in a variety of ways. His commandment to love one another as I have loved you is spoken openly in the Gospel of John. This message and mandatum serve as a strong reminder of the basic goal of our vocation. To serve others out of love for God, not measuring it by our success or failure, but trusting that this is what God has asked of me.
Do you need a reminder now and then? Trust that the God of surprises will send it to you, perhaps when you least expect it. Count on it, put it in your heart, and live it!

Recuérdales a Las Personas de Estas Cosas
A veces nos olvidamos. Nos olvidamos de lo que vamos hacer. Nos olvidamos la razón en por qué escogimos un cierto camino. Nos olvidamos algunas decisiones básicas que nos llevaron hasta donde estamos hoy, pero de repente, nos recordamos! ¿Cómo nos recordamos? Alguien o algún incidente nos lo recuerda.
Los seguidores de Jesús en el primer siglo del Cristianismo también se olvidaron de algunas cosas. Se olvidaron cómo Jesús les enseñó a cuidarse unos a otros, a ayudar al extranjero, a dar a quienes necesitaban comida o refugio. Se enfocaron en sus propias cosas y se olvidaron del mensaje básico del cuidado por la comunidad y la preocupación por los demás. Sus líderes se dieron cuenta de que debían recordarles más de una vez lo que esta nueva forma de vida significaba para ellos y para sus comunidades. Lo mismo ocurre con nosotras.
Necesitamos recordatorios, y también necesitamos la disciplina para dar un paso atrás y recordar nuestra vocación de servicio en el ministerio, nuestra vocación de cuidar a la comunidad y nuestra vocación de escuchar los clamores de quienes lo necesitan.
El discernimiento vocacional conlleva momentos de olvido y recuerdo, y se nutre del sencillo mensaje de amor que Jesús nos da de diversas maneras. Su mandamiento de amarnos las unas a las otras como Él nos ha amado se expresa claramente en el Evangelio de Juan. Este mensaje y mandato nos recuerda con fuerza el objetivo fundamental de nuestra vocación: servir a las demás por amor a Dios, sin medirlo por nuestro éxito o fracaso, sino confiando en que esto es lo que Dios ha pedido de mí.
¿Necesita un recordatorio de vez en cuando? Confíe en que el Dios de las sorpresas se lo enviará, quizá cuando menos lo espere. ¡Cuente con ello, guárdelo en su corazón y vívalo!
