Did you hear that? | ¿Escuchaste eso?

Did you hear that?

Listen, did you hear it? Listen again! There it is! A word, a sound, a thought, a wonder, or even a worry. Psalm 95 reminds us, “If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your heart.” Listening can be one of the most difficult things we do. For me, I start listening to my thoughts or to someone’s statements, and I get distracted. I start thinking of everything else I want to do, have to do, or haven’t even thought of doing. Someone else’s dialogue can take me in a totally different direction.

Vocation discernment depends on listening. We will hear people say, “ I heard God tell me…” and then wonder just how that happened. How do we know what we are hearing comes from God? Spiritual leaders tell us that there are signs we can watch for to help us know that something is coming from God. One of those signs is affirmation. As we enter a time of prayer and bring our vocation desire before God, we want to pay attention to how our actions or prayer or conversations with others are being affirmed. If we are feeling positive or comfortable with the conversation, that could be a sign of affirmation. If we begin to feel some discomfort or can hear that this conversation doesn’t fit well, that is also a sign to move on in another direction.

Listening can come in surprising ways if we ask God to keep us attentive both in our prayer and in our external actions with others. Others may see your vocation gift when you are not even noticing. Someone may say, I think you have a vocation to serve other people, but you haven’t thought about that; you just want to be a medic or a teacher. Let all the signs be an opportunity for good listening. There it is! Listen, harden not your heart, and see where God is leading you today.

Escuche, ¿lo oyó? ¡Escúchelo de nuevo! ¡Ahí está! Una palabra, un sonido, un pensamiento, una maravilla o incluso una preocupación. El Salmo 95 nos recuerda: “Si hoy escuchas la voz de Dios, no endurezcas tu corazón”. Escuchar puede ser una de las cosas más difíciles que hacemos. En mi caso, empiezo a escuchar mis pensamientos o las palabras de alguien, y me distraigo. Empiezo a pensar en todo lo demás que quiero hacer, tengo que hacer o ni siquiera he pensado en hacer. El diálogo de otra persona puede llevarme por un camino totalmente diferente.

El discernimiento vocacional depende de escuchar. Escucharemos a la gente decir, " Escuché a Dios decirme..." y luego nos preguntamos cómo sucedió. ¿Cómo sabemos que lo que escuchamos proviene de Dios? Los líderes espirituales nos dicen que hay señales que podemos esperar a ver para saber que algo viene de Dios. Una de esas señales es la afirmación. Al entrar en un momento de oración y presentar nuestro deseo vocacional ante Dios, debemos prestar atención a cómo se afirman nuestras acciones, oraciones o conversaciones con los demás. Si nos sentimos positivas o cómodas con la conversación, eso podría ser una señal de afirmación. Si empezamos a sentirnos incómodas o percibimos que esta conversación no encaja bien, también es una señal para avanzar en otra dirección.

Escuchar puede resultar sorprendente si le pedimos a Dios que nos mantenga atentas tanto en la oración como en nuestras acciones con los demás. Otros podrán ver su don vocacional cuando ni siquiera usted se de cuenta. Alguien podría decir, Creo que tiene una vocación de servir a los demás, pero usted no lo ha pensado; usted solo quiere ser médico o maestra. Deje que todas las señales sean una oportunidad para escuchar con atención. ¡Ahí lo tiene! Escuche, no endurezca su corazón y observe adónde la guíe Dios hoy.
