A Time Away | Un Tiempo Fuera

A Time Away

If everything works out according to plan, I will be on an eight day retreat at the time in which you are receiving my reflection. A retreat is something that I look forward to each year. Annually, I approach this time away with a desire to immerse myself in the heart of God. Fr. Michael Judge, a Franciscan priest who became known as being the first identified fatality of 9/11 is known for a simple prayer that guided his life: “Take me where you want me to go (God) and keep me out of the way.” I’ll be claiming his prayer during this special time.

I’ve heard it said that “(wo)man proposes and God disposes.” It is my hope that God will takes over so as to allow my retreat time to unfold as God believes will benefit me most. Days of retreat are graced opportunities to allow God to move within me in a place and space where I am freed from the distractions of routines and the customary interruptions that punctuate most days.

This year, I have chosen to spend my time of retreat immersed in nature. The setting is on the water. It is my hope that the weather cooperates. I look forward to rest for my body in the sunshine of God’s presence, as well as restoration for my mind and heart.

A retreat experience is an extended time of prayer and reflection, fulfilling a need that Jesus, too, had in his earthly life. Our Scriptures make it clear that Jesus regularly withdrew to quiet places to pray. (Lk. 5:16) In so doing, he has modeled the importance of stepping back in order to move forward with renewed purpose.

In the Christian tradition, a retreat is an opportunity to refuel, refocus, and consciously place one’s self in the arms of a loving God. In a sense, it is retreating from the ordinary to provide an environment in which the voice of God can be more clearly discerned.

There is not one singular form or formula as to types of retreat, just as there is no singular way to pray. Although I will be sharing this retreat experience with a friend and several other people, my retreat this year will be blanketed in silence. When I first went on a silent retreat years ago, the experience was foreign to me and somewhat strange. Since then, I have developed a real appreciation for being a part of a community of like-minded hearts who are content in sharing the gift of silence together, trusting that God will give each of us whatever it is that we need.

I’ve asked to have a Spiritual Director or Companion available to me should that opportunity prove beneficial to me this year. Sometimes – but not always - while on a silent retreat, I have found direction to be clarifying. I have learned that there are times when I need to say aloud what is going on within me in a safe and sacred place.

I do hope that all of you have an opportunity to retreat for a day or for a week or to have a chance to do whatever it is that you need to deepen your relationship with God. I can assure you that you’ll be all the better for engaging in the experience. Blessings!

Un Tiempo Fuera

Si todo sale según lo que he planificado, estaré en un retiro de ocho días cuando reciba esta reflexión. Un retiro es algo que espero con ilusión cada año. Anualmente, me acerco a este tiempo con el deseo de sumergirme en el corazón de Dios. El padre Michael Judge, un sacerdote franciscano conocido por ser la primera víctima mortal identificada del 9/11, es conocido por una sencilla oración que guió su vida: “Llévame adonde quieras que vaya (Dios) y no permitas que yo te estorbe”. Me haré eco de su oración durante este tiempo especial.

He oído decir que “el hombre (mujer) propone y Dios dispone”. Espero que Dios tome el control para que mi tiempo de retiro se desarrolle como Él cree que sea de más beneficio para mí. Los días de retiro son oportunidades benditas para permitir que Dios actúe en mi interior, en un lugar y espacio donde me libero de las distracciones de la rutina y las interrupciones diarias que marcan la mayoría de los días.

Este año, he elegido pasar mi retiro en plena naturaleza. El lugar está junto al agua. Espero que el tiempo coopere. Anhelo descansar mi cuerpo bajo el sol de la presencia de Dios, así como renovar mi mente y mi corazón.

Un retiro espiritual es un tiempo prolongado de oración y reflexión, que satisface una necesidad que Jesús también tuvo durante su vida terrenal. Las Escrituras dejan claro que Jesús se retiraba con frecuencia a lugares tranquilos para orar (Lc. 5:16). Al hacerlo, nos modeló la importancia de tomar distancia para avanzar con un propósito renovado.

En la tradición Cristiana, un retiro espiritual es una oportunidad para recargar energías, reenfocarse y entregarse conscientemente en los brazos de un Dios amoroso. En cierto modo, se trata de alejarse de lo cotidiano para crear un ambiente donde la voz de Dios pueda discernirse con mayor claridad.

No existe una única forma o fórmula para los retiros espirituales, así como tampoco existe una única manera de orar. Aunque compartiré esta experiencia con una amiga y otras personas, mi retiro de este año estará marcado por el silencio. Cuando participé por primera vez en un retiro de silencio hace años, la experiencia me resultó extraña. Desde entonces, he desarrollado un profundo aprecio por formar parte de una comunidad de personas con un mismo sentir de corazón, que se conforman en compartir el don del silencio juntas, confiando en que Dios nos dará a cada una lo que necesitamos.

He pedido tener a mi disposición una Directora Espiritual o Acompañante Espiritual si esa oportunidad me resulta beneficiosa este año. A veces - aunque no siempre - durante un retiro de silencio, he encontrado claridad en la guía espiritual. He aprendido que hay momentos en los que necesito expresar en voz alta lo que siento en mi interior, en un lugar seguro y sagrado.

Espero sinceramente que todas ustedes tengan la oportunidad de retirarse por un día o una semana, o que tengan la oportunidad de hacer lo que sea necesario para profundizar su relación con Dios. Les aseguro que les va a enriquecer enormemente esta experiencia. ¡Bendiciones!
