In Memoriam

Sister Kathleen Walli, OP

Sister Mary Alice Naour, OP(1937-2025)

The worship aid cover for Sister Kathleen Walli’s funeral Mass featured a portion of one of the Book of Proverbs’ best-known passages: the description of the “Valiant Woman.”

A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. She shops around for the best yarns and cottons, and enjoys knitting and sewing. She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking.

The more complete passage found in Proverbs 31 was chosen as the first reading for the Mass, and Sister Maria Goretti Browne, who preached the homily, noted how well it fit Sister Kathleen:

Kathleen was a home economics teacher and did that not come through loud and clear as you listened to the first reading? “She is skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking … she is quick to assist anyone in need … reaches out to help the poor … she makes her own clothing and dresses in colorful linens and silks … her clothes are well-made and elegant and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.” Do those words not describe Kathleen?

Skill in home economics undoubtedly came in handy in the large Walli family. She was the fifth of fourteen children born to Henry and Marian (Bomberry) Walli, and the first daughter; preceding her were Richard, Charles, Henry, and Larry, with Yvonne, Dennis, Douglas, Sheila, Lance, Maribeth, Michael, Suzanne, and Joy following.

Sister Kathleen Walli was a big help to me when I was conducting research for my dissertation. I graduated from Loyola Chicago in 1990. She assisted me in the Adrian Dominican archives. I researched Chicago Catholic High Schools opened or closed between 1955-1980 including Aquinas & Regina. She introduced me to Sister Mary Philip Ryan. Sister Kathleen also provided follow-up details when I'd write (this was in 1989 before email) with questions. A neat lady & a great help!

Sister Kathleen was one of God's precious gifts to all of us. I've known her since the early 1970's and always enjoyed our fun-filled lively visits! I was lucky enough to be the recipient of one of her beautifully made garments! She will be sorely missed. Our loss is heavens gain!
