Welcoming the Incarnation through Creation

When I present on Dominican spirituality, I like to spend some time talking about how one of the important aspects of our spirituality is the goodness of Creation. This often takes people by surprise, since a love for Creation is more associated with Franciscan spirituality. However, St. Dominic founded the Dominicans in opposition to the Cathers, who were distrustful of the material world. At the heart of Dominican Spirituality is the insight that God reconciles all of Creation, both heaven and earth, into God’s very self through Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:19), and of the sacredness of Jesus Christ becoming flesh and choosing to dwell amongst us.

The Creation that is around us is the freely given gift of a God who loves us beyond measure. Through that same love, Jesus Christ was sent to us and lived, died, and rose for us and our salvation. Both these mysteries lead us back to the same place of a loving God who desires our joy and well-being. During this season of Christmas, these mysteries are particularly intertwined, as we celebrate the wonders of Jesus’ birth through things that God created: light, green plants, abundant food, and other people. Light is the first thing named in the Creation narrative of Genesis 1:3—5, and Jesus, the Light of the World, is celebrated at Christmas time with candles, lights on trees and houses, and all around our churches. Likewise, the green plants are named in Genesis 1:11—12 and serve to remind us of the promise of life in the depths of winter. Finally, the food that we prepare comes from the fruits of Creation, and the people that surround us were created in their mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). Without these gifts of creation, of good food and company with which to celebrate the season, our Christmas would not be so joyful and merry.

Recibiendo la Encarnación a través de la Creación

Cuando presento la espiritualidad Domínica, me gusta dedicar tiempo a hablar sobre cómo uno de los aspectos importantes de nuestra espiritualidad es la bondad de la Creación. Esto muchas veces sorprender a la gente, ya que el amor por la Creación se asocia más con la espiritualidad Franciscana. Sin embargo, Santo Domingo fundó la Orden de los Domínicos en oposición a los Cátaros, quienes desconfiaban del mundo material. En el corazón de la espiritualidad Domínica se encuentra la comprensión de que Dios reconcilia toda la Creación, tanto el cielo como la tierra, en su propia esencia por medio de Jesucristo (Colosenses 1:19), y de la santidad de Jesucristo al hacerse carne y elegir morar entre nosotras.

La Creación que nos rodea es el don gratuito de un Dios que nos ama sin medida. Por ese mismo amor, Jesucristo fue enviado a nosotras y vivió, murió y resucitó por nosotras y por nuestra salvación. Ambos misterios nos llevan de regreso al mismo lugar de un Dios amoroso que desea nuestra alegría y bienestar. Durante esta época Navideña, estos misterios se entrelazan particularmente, al celebrar las maravillas del nacimiento de Jesús a través de las cosas que Dios creó: la luz, las plantas verdes, la abundancia de alimento y otras personas. La luz es lo primero que se menciona en el relato de la Creación de Génesis 1:3-5, y Jesús, la Luz del Mundo, se celebra en Navidad con velas, luces en árboles y casas, y alrededor de nuestras iglesias. Asimismo, las plantas verdes se nombran en Génesis 1:11-12 y sirven para recordarnos la promesa de vida en pleno invierno. Finalmente, la comida que preparamos proviene de los frutos de la Creación, y las personas que nos rodean fueron creadas en el vientre de sus madres (Salmo 139:13). Sin estos regalos de la creación, de la buena comida y de la compañía con la que se celebra la temporada, nuestra Navidad no sería tan alegre y feliz.

Durante esta temporada Navideña, les deseo a ustedes y a sus seres queridos una temporada llena de alegría y felicidad, y espero que disfruten de las maravillas de la Creación mientras celebran el nacimiento de Jesús.
