The Opportunities in Transition

One of the most amazing parts of the story of St. Dominic that I learned about as a novice was his many travels. St. Dominic might have been born in the small town of Caleruega in Spain and spent many of his early years only about 35 and a half miles away in Osma, but his journeys would take him to Denmark, France, and Italy. In an age without cars or four-lane divided highways, these trips would have been arduous, taking weeks and months. There is a direct throughline between St. Dominic’s travels and the identity of the Dominicans who follow in his footsteps, since part of our identity is being itinerant and mendicant, meaning that we have a spirituality around traveling for the sake of the mission and begging for what we need.

Because Dominicans travel and move so much, we often find ourselves living through transitions. Even when we ourselves are not moving, community members come and go, changing the rhythms of our daily life. With all of the transitions that we experience, it could be easy to be overwhelmed by all the change that we are called to embrace, but while I doubt any of us experiencing transitions find them easy, Dominicans have found ways to seek the opportunities that are present in transitions, just as St. Dominic did in the thirteenth century.

The best-known opportunity that arises from embracing itinerancy and the transitions that come with it is that it allows us to expand our perspectives. This is such a truism that it is referenced in advertisements for travel companies and in books (both fiction and non-fiction) where the protagonists find themselves in their world travels. Going back to the example of St. Dominic, other benefits begin to arise. St. Dominic discovered his mission preaching in the Langue d’Oc region of France because he had traveled there and discovered a need. Another grace that St. Dominic points us towards is that each time we embrace itinerancy and the transitions that come with it, we recognize how much we depend upon God. I know that this has been my experience, as I have made the leap into doing a new academic program, beginning a new ministry, or moving to a new location. When I have been in these periods of transition, I have been aware of how God has led me to this point of exploring something new, and this allows me to be open to the new relationships, insights, and experiences that these transitions bring.

I pray that you will be open to all of the blessings in the transitions that you are experiencing right now, and I hope that you will also experience God’s presence with you on all your journeys.

Las Oportunidades en la Transición

Una de las partes más fascinantes de la historia de Santo Domingo que aprendí como novicia fueron sus numerosos viajes. Santo Domingo nació en el pequeño pueblo de Caleruega, en España, y pasó gran parte de su infancia a tan solo 35.5 millas de distancia, en Osma, pero sus viajes lo llevaron a Dinamarca, Francia e Italia. En una época sin automóviles ni autopistas de cuatro carriles, estos viajes han de haber sido arduos, durando semanas e incluso meses. Existe una conexión directa entre los viajes de Santo Domingo y la identidad de las Domínicas que siguen en sus pasos, ya que parte de nuestra identidad es ser itinerantes y mendicantes; es decir, tenemos una espiritualidad que gira en torno a viajar por la misión y mendigar por lo que necesitamos.

Debido a que las Domínicas viajamos y nos mudamos con frecuencia, muchas veces nos vemos viviendo en constante transición. Aún cuando nosotras mismas no nos estamos mudando, las miembras de la comunidad van y vienen, alterando el ritmo de nuestra vida diaria. Con todas las transiciones que experimentamos, podría ser fácil sentirse abrumada por el cambio que somos llamadas a aceptar, pero aunque dudo que alguna de nosotras encontremos que estas transiciones son fáciles, las Domínicas hemos encontrado maneras de aprovechar las oportunidades que se presentan en ellas, tal como lo hizo Santo Domingo en el siglo XIII.

La oportunidad más conocida que surge al abrazar la itinerancia y las transiciones que conlleva es que nos permite ampliar nuestras perspectivas. Esto es tan cierto que se menciona en anuncios de agencias de viajes y en libros (tanto de ficción como de no ficción) donde los protagonistas se encuentran en sus viajes por el mundo. Volviendo al ejemplo de Santo Domingo, comienzan a surgir otros beneficios. Santo Domingo descubrió su misión predicando en la región de Langue d'Oc, en Francia, porque había viajado allí y había descubierto una necesidad. Otra gracia a la que Santo Domingo nos señala es que cada vez que abrazamos la itinerancia y las transiciones que conlleva, es que reconocemos cuánto dependemos de Dios. Sé que esta ha sido mi experiencia, al dar el salto a un nuevo programa académico, comenzar un nuevo ministerio o mudarme a un nuevo lugar. Durante estos periodos de transición, he sido consciente de cómo Dios me ha guiado hasta este punto de explorar algo nuevo, y esto me permite estar abierta a las nuevas relaciones, perspectivas y experiencias que estas transiciones traen consigo.

Ruego que esté abierta a todas las bendiciones en las transiciones que esté experimentando ahora mismo, y espero que también experimente la presencia de Dios en todos sus caminos.
