Sister Romona Nowak, OP


Sister Romona Nowak, formerly known as Sister Jane Lucian Nowak, died on November 8, 2017, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 72 years of age and in the 51st year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Romona was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Lucian and Jeanette (Wysocki) Nowak. She graduated from Aquinas Dominican High School in Chicago, Illinois, and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Michigan, and a Master of Science degree from the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Sister also was certified as a Chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains and as a Retreat and Spiritual Director by Colombiere Spirituality Center.

Sister Romona spent nine years ministering in elementary and secondary education in Chicago, Illinois, which includes four years at Aquinas Dominican High School, an Adrian Dominican school. She was director of religious education for eight years in Hayward, California; and Joliet and Lansing, Illinois. She served as a chaplain or a pastoral care associate for 13 years in Huntington, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Beech Grove and West Lafayette, Indiana; and as a chaplain for 13 years in nursing care facilities in Dearborn, Detroit, and Adrian, where she was chaplain at Maria Health Care Center for six years. 

Sister was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her brother Robert (Grace) Nowak of Oswego, Illinois. 

The Rite of Committal will be held in the Congregation cemetery on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the Congregation cemetery. Memorial Mass will be on Friday, November 10, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Catherine’s Chapel followed by the Ritual of Remembering at 1:30 p.m. in the Rose Room of the Dominican Life Center. The Memorial Mass will be live streamed.
