The Adrian Dominican Sisters invite you to contemplate how we as individuals seek truth and how we can improve our media literacy. Reflections will be posted on this page with the most recent at the top.
As Sisters, Associates, and Partners in Mission, we are constantly working to Seek Truth – but what does that mean? We asked several Sisters the question, “What is Truth?” These are their responses.

Truth is the quality of being in agreement with reality or fact. So, how, in a time of constant media input, do we wade through the mountains of information and find truth?
These five questions, from the Young African Leaders Initiative, encourage people to think critically about the media that they consume, create space for formulating opinions, and provide a framework for evaluating credibility within media messages. 1. Who created this message? 2. What techniques are used to attract my attention? 3. How might people understand this message differently? 4. What lifestyles, values, and points of view are represented in, or omitted from, this message? 5. Why was this message published?
Media literacy is the ability to understand, create, and participate with media messages in all mediums by understanding the role of media in society; the ability to assess the influence of those messages on our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, perceptions, beliefs, and health; and the ability to use that media to provide information, send a message, or tell one’s own story in a way that is thoughtful, conscientious, safe, and responsible.

On January 9, 2025, Pope Francis spoke about the importance of communication, truth, and common language that would enable people to dialogue, understand one another, and resolve conflicts.
This concept particularly resonates with the Adrian Dominican Sisters' Mission, Vision, and Enactments. Over the next few weeks, we will explore the idea of media literacy: what it means, what it looks like, and how we all can Seek Truth.
