September 11, 2026, Detroit – About a year after literacy centers sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters became independent, nonprofit agencies, they have continued to have an impact on people in Detroit who need assistance in their literacy skills in English.
The Adrian Dominican Sisters founded the Dominican Literacy Center in 1989, the Siena Literacy Center in 1995, and All Saints Literacy Center in 2015 to offer free one-on-one tutoring to adult learners who are developing their English skills. Learners include people for whom English is a second language and native English speakers who want to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM Sisters) founded the Epiphany Education Center in 2005 to help elementary- and secondary-school students develop their skills in English. Adrian Dominican Sisters have since collaborated with them.
“We’re not just teaching literacy,” Grace Irwin, new Executive Director of All Saints Literacy Center, said in an interview with The Detroit Catholic. “We’re helping adults build better lives and gain confidence in their everyday lives. We’re helping them realize their God-given potential.”
