I find fascinating these times of pandemic, the rise and fall of COVID-19 infections, divisions on whether to mask or unmask and social distance or not. That is, when I am not horrified by the persistence of this disease and its variants!

What I’m aware of in myself and as I listen to those I talk to is an awareness of nature’s demand that we pay attention to what’s happening. Some folks say they have been re-evaluating the pace of their lives, the activities and busy schedules they previously kept. I heard a mother interviewed the other day say, “My husband and I don’t want to return to that level of busy-ness. We don’t need it. We’ve realized there is much more meaning in life in the relationships we have than in rushing from one thing to another all the time.”

In this country, just when we thought we were going to be free to interact more, begin to go out and gather in social groups, the disease variants arrived and necessitated more caution again. 

What about you? Are you thinking differently about your life, your choices, how you want to invest your life energies, who may need you to respond to their needs? These times are a way God speaks to us, captures our attention, and asks for more from us. How will you respond? En Tiempos Como Estos

Encuentro fascinante estos tiempos de pandemia, el sube y baja de las infecciones de COVID-19, las divisiones sobre si usar mascarilla o no usar mascarilla y si mantener la distancia social o no. Es decir, ¡cuando no estoy horrorizada por la persistencia de esta enfermedad y sus variantes!

De lo que soy consciente en mí misma y cuando escucho a aquellos con quienes hablo es el reconocimiento de la demanda de la naturaleza de que prestemos atención a lo que está sucediendo. Algunas personas dicen que han estado reevaluando el ritmo de sus vidas, las actividades y las agendas ocupadas que mantenían anteriormente. Escuché a una madre entrevistada el otro día decir: “Mi esposo y yo no queremos volver a ese nivel de ajetreo. No lo necesitamos. Nos hemos dado cuenta de que hay mucho más significado en la vida en las relaciones que tenemos que en apresurarnos de una cosa a otra todo el tiempo."

En este país, justo cuando pensábamos que íbamos a ser libres para interactuar más, empezar a salir y reunirnos en grupos sociales, las variantes de la enfermedad llegaron y requirieron nuevamente más precaución.

“…the crowd…got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea…”  John 6:24-25

A discernment journey is a deep search for belonging, but even more it is a search with and for Jesus in your life. Much like the crowds who went to lots of trouble to find Jesus, you must trouble yourself to find where you are called.

Like those “crowds,” you may have to find the vehicles that ultimately get you to a place of finding Jesus, waiting for you. In the process you’ll discover he may be found in many places; there are many ways to give yourself in a life of service.

If the call you sense is for service through a religious life commitment, then keep searching to find which community fits your gifts, your longings to serve and the relationships in community living. It can take a while, so patience has to be part of the journey. You may not need a “crowd” to travel with, but it helps to seek along with others so you can learn from them. This October 8-10 we will provide a prayerful, reflective experience with a group of seekers who are considering whether theirs is a call to be a Dominican Sister. Para Encontrar Pertenencia

“… La multitud… subió a los barcos y fueron a Capernaum buscando a Jesús. Y cuando lo encontraron al otro lado del mar… ” Juan 6:24-25

La jornada del discernimiento es una búsqueda profunda de pertenecer, pero más aún es una búsqueda con y para Jesús en tu vida. Al igual que las multitudes que hicieron mucho esfuerzo para encontrar a Jesús, debe esforzarse por encontrar su llamado.  

Al igual que esas "multitudes", es posible que tenga que encontrar las formas que finalmente la llevarán a un lugar donde encontrar a Jesús, esperándola. En el proceso, descubrirá que se le puede encontrar en muchos lugares; hay muchas formas de entregarse a una vida de servicio.

Si el llamado que siente es al servicio a través de un compromiso de vida religiosa, continúe buscando para encontrar cuál comunidad se adapte a sus dones, sus anhelos de servir y las relaciones en la vida comunitaria. Puede tomra tiempo, por lo que la paciencia debe formar parte de la jornada. Es posible que no necesite un “grupo” con la que viaje, pero es útil buscar junta con otras para que pueda aprender de ellas. Este 8-10 de Octubre proveeremos una experiencia de oración y reflexión con un grupo de buscadoras que están considerando si el suyo es un llamado a ser una Hermana Domínica. One of the blessings I have in my life as a Sister is that I get to go away for a week on retreat every year. During this time, I will have the opportunity to really take time to listen to God, without the distractions of email, work, or videos on the internet. This was also an opportunity that the students I worked with at the high school where I ministered would receive. Each of the classes has an opportunity each week to go on retreat every year with each other. I was always amazed to watch the freshmen when they began the retreat and at the end of the day. Retreats are always about our relationships with others, both with fellow retreatants and with God. 

Even if it isn’t possible to go away for a week-long retreat, or even a weekend, it is possible to take some of the principles of a retreat and integrate them into your life. Take a Saturday or another day when you don’t have work or school, and take (scheduling if you need to) a couple of hours away from distractions (whether that’s TikTok, Instagram, or email), and take some time to get in touch with God, whether by journaling or a walk in a park. I hope that the time you take to connect with God bears great fruit!

Tomarse el tiempo con Dios

Una de las bendiciones que tengo en mi vida como Hermana es que puedo ir por una semana de retiro todos los años. Durante este tiempo, tengo la oportunidad de tomarme un tiempo para escuchar a Dios, sin las distracciones del correo electrónico, el trabajo o los videos en el Internet. Esto también es una oportunidad que reciben los estudiantes con los que trabajo en la escuela secundaria donde ministro. Cada una de las clases tiene la oportunidad de ir a un retiro cada año por una semana. Siempre me sorprende ver a los estudiantes de primer año cuando comienzan el retiro y al final del día. Los retiros siempre se tratan de nuestras relaciones con los demás, tanto con los compañeros de retiro como con Dios.

Si no es posible irse a un retiro de una semana, o un fin de semana, sí es posible tomar algunas de las enseñanzas de un retiro e integrarlas en su vida. Tómese un Sábado u otro día cuando no tenga trabajo o escuela, y tómese (prográmelo si es necesario) un par de horas lejos de las distracciones (ya sea TikTok, Instagram o correo electrónico), y tómese un tiempo para ponerse en contacto con Dios, ya sea escribiendo en un diario o dando un paseo por un parque. ¡Espero que el tiempo que dedique a conectarse con Dios dé grandes frutos!

Jesus certainly had the right idea for his disciples when they returned from their mission to preach and heal, as recorded in last Sunday’s Gospel. He cautioned them, “Take some quiet time. Think about what happened while you were away and how God was working through you. Reflect on the impact your words and actions had on the people you met. Get in touch with how you are feeling. Rest.”

These same words of advice are helpful while you are discerning God’s call for your life. Taking time for quiet every so often will help you be in touch with how God is working in your life. Noticing the ways God has called you at this point in your life can give clues for a way forward with your life. If you feel a sense of satisfaction and contentment with your actions; if you see a change in peoples’ lives because of your words or actions, you may be called to continue this path into your future.

En el Silencio

Jesús ciertamente tenia la mejor idea para sus discípulos cuando regresaron de su misión de predicar y sanar, como se recordó en el Evangelio del Domingo pasado. Les advirtió: “Tómen tiempo en silencio. Piensen en lo que sucedió mientras estaban fuera y en cómo Dios estaba obrando a través de ustedes. Reflexionen sobre el impacto que sus palabras y acciones tuvieron en las personas que conocieron. Pónganse en contacto en como se sienten. Descansen."

Estas mismas palabras de consejo son útiles mientras discierne el llamado de Dios para su vida. Tomarse un tiempo para estar tranquila de vez en cuando le ayudará a estar en contacto en cómo Dios está obrando en su vida. - Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC

The quote above can be a guide for how to know this is my calling, my vocation. Before a young woman discovers the response to where my gladness meets the world’s needs, the word vocation is a dilemma that can be confusing and frustrating. If you are a person with many gifts and with many opportunities offered to you, then give yourself the time for quiet and thinking this through. What is it, that when you are engaged in it you sense a rightness and a fit about it? 

It could be as you are absorbed in some service to people who need whatever you’re doing for them. It could be the pull on your heart when you work with those who don’t seem to get a fair shake in life or those thirsty for knowledge or those who suffer physically or mentally or feeling unsettled by the needs you see. Whatever the need is of the people you are serving, if your acts of serving them leave you with joy, satisfaction, a sense of deep meaning at having made a difference, these could be signs of your calling.

As Sister Raphael Considine writes in her poem, Trasna, “You will have light enough for your next step.” Your next step may be to talk these experiences over with a mentor, spiritual director, or a good friend and hear what they think about your discovery. This light is what God gives for your discernment journey.

¿Cómo Puedo Saber?

La cita anterior puede ser una guía sobre cómo saber que este es mi llamado, mi vocación. Antes de que una joven descubra la respuesta a dónde mi alegría satisface las necesidades del mundo, la palabra vocación es un dilema que puede resultar confuso y frustrante. Si usted es una persona con muchos dones y con muchas oportunidades que se le ofrecen, tómese el tiempo para estar tranquila y pensar en esto. ¿Qué es lo que, cuando se dedica a ello, siente que es correcto y queda bien?

Podría ser cuando está envuelta en algún servicio a personas que necesitan lo que sea que esté haciendo por ellos. Podría ser el impulso de su corazón cuando trabaja con aquellos que no parecen recibir un trato justo en la vida o aquellos que están sedientos de conocimiento o aquellos que sufren física o mentalmente o se sienten inquietos por las necesidades que ve. Cualquiera que sea la necesidad de las personas a las que está sirviendo, si sus actos de servirles le dejan gozo, satisfacción, un sentido de profundo significado por haber hecho una diferencia, estos podrían ser señales de su llamado.

Como escribe la Hermana Raphael Considine en su poema, Trasna, "Tendrás suficiente luz para tu próximo paso." Su próximo paso puede ser hablar de estas experiencias con una mentor, una directora espiritual o una buena amiga y escuchar lo que piensan sobre su descubrimiento. Esta luz es la que Dios da para su camino de discernimiento.

In the midst of all the fireworks, concerts, speeches, and memorials this past weekend, I began thinking about the freedom we were celebrating.

Freedom is an essential quality needed when we are discerning how we choose to devote our lives. God does not coerce or force us into anything, but invites us to consider a call to follow the way of Jesus, a life commitment in service to God’s people and all creation. As a discerner, when you experience freedom within yourself to choose to respond to God’s call, to that extent your journey begins freely.

Freedom also intertwines with truth: the truth of where we are called to invest our life energies, the truth of our giftedness, the truth of the many needs of people and planet and the truth of God’s invitation to respond in some way. In response to a free choice, we experience peace and contentment, if not immediately, then as we move along the way. Inner peace is a way God confirms our choice and assures us.

We read in the Scriptures “… you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) May you be free enough to respond to God’s invitation. If we can help, please be in touch. Sister Katherine shares how God used her “plan”.

Libertad Vivida

En medio de todos los fuegos artificiales, conciertos, discursos, y memoriales este fin de semana pasado, comencé a pensar en la libertad que estábamos celebrando.

La libertad es una cualidad esencial necesaria cuando estamos discerniendo cómo decidimos dedicar nuestras vidas. Dios no nos obliga o presiona a hacer nada, sino que nos invita a considerar un llamado a seguir el camino de Jesús, un compromiso de vida al servicio del pueblo de Dios y de toda la creación. Como discernidor, cuando experimenta la libertad dentro de si para escoger responder al llamado de Dios, en esa medida su viaje comienza libremente.

La libertad también se entrelaza con la verdad: la verdad de dónde somo llamadas a invertir nuestras energías de vida, la verdad de nuestros dones, la verdad de las muchas necesidades de las personas y el planeta y la verdad de la invitación de Dios a responder de alguna manera. En respuesta a una decisión libre, experimentamos paz y satisfacción, si no de inmediato, a medida que avanzamos en el camino. La paz interior es una forma en que Dios confirma nuestra decisión y nos da seguridad.

Leemos en las Escrituras "... conocerás la verdad y la verdad te hará libre". (Juan 8:32) Que sea lo suficientemente libre para responder a la invitación de Dios. Si podemos ayudarla, comuníquese. La hermana Katherine comparte cómo Dios usó su “plan”.

“I am sending you to the...rebels who [are] stubborn of heart...But you shall say to them: Thus says the LORD GOD! And whether they heed or resist...they shall know that a prophet has been among them.” (Ezekiel 2:4-5)

In the above quote from next Sunday’s first reading is the kind of call God extends to sisters, brothers, and priests who live religious life. It is the call to be prophetic, to speak out and act against any injustice wherever it is experienced. And further God calls us to do so even in the face of others’ stubbornness and non-listening. It is one of the traits of God, to persist no matter what, until right relationships are established on Earth.

As you discern the call for your life, listen to your heart and see if this is what God is calling you to do. God chooses women and men to be instruments of change and transformation. If something in you is attracted to this kind of challenge, pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, asking if this call to speak with the voice of God – to be prophetic – to those who continue to ignore the call to love one another. Yours may be the voice that is missing and now may be your time to consider responding “yes” to God’s call to you. Your passion for justice has a place in religious life. Contact us.

Profetas de Dios Hoy

“Te estoy enviando a los...rebeldes que [son] tercos de corazón...Pero les dirás: ¡Así dice el SEÑOR DIOS! Y si prestan atención o se resisten...sabrán que un profeta ha estado entre ellos." (Ezequiel 2:4-5)

En la cita anterior de la primera lectura del próximo domingo se encuentra el tipo de llamado que Dios extiende a las hermanas, hermanos, y sacerdotes que viven la vida religiosa. Es el llamado a ser profético, a hablar y actuar contra cualquier injusticia donde sea que se experimente. Y además, Dios nos llama a hacerlo incluso frente a la terquedad y la falta de escucha de los demás. Es una de las características de Dios, persistir sin importar qué, hasta que se establezcan las relaciones correctas en la Tierra.

Al discernir el llamado de su vida, escuche a su corazón y vea si esto es lo que Dios le está llamando a hacer. Dios elige a mujeres y hombres para que sean instrumentos de cambio y transformación. Si algo en ti se siente atraído por este tipo de desafío, ore por el guía del Espíritu Santo, preguntando si este llamado a hablar con la voz de Dios, a ser profética, a aquellas que continúan ignorando el llamado a amarse unas a otras. One of the best parts of summer is that there is more time to pick up some books that I have been meaning to read for a while. Some of those books will be fiction that doesn’t make me think too hard, but which allow me for, at least a few hours, to immerse myself in another world. Other books are about subjects that interest me, such as history, while other books are for my ministry, including the books I’m reading for a course I’m taking this summer. However, I do always try to have some books that help me to understand my relationship to God. At various times, this has meant reading everything from poems by Mary Oliver, Thich Nhat Hanh, or William A. Barry’s book A Friendship Like No Other or the writings of Catherine of Siena. What each of these writings do is invite me into another perspective of how we are called into relationship with God, and, in doing so, helps me to learn more about who God is, and how I can share what I know of God with the world.

¿Qué hay en su lista de "Para ser leído"?

Una de las mejores partes del verano es que hay más tiempo para recoger algunos libros que he querido leer por un tiempo. Algunos de esos libros serán de ficción que no me harán pensar mucho, pero que me permitan, al menos unas horas, sumergirme en otro mundo. Otros libros tratarán sobre temas que me interesan, como la historia, mientras que otros libros son para mi ministerio, incluyendo los libros que estoy leyendo para un curso que voy a tomar este verano. Sin embargo, siempre trato de tener algunos libros que me ayuden a comprender mi relación con Dios. En varias ocasiones, esto ha significado leer poemas de Mary Oliver, Thich Nhat Hanh o el libro de William A. The Gospel for last Sunday told the story of the tiny mustard seed that starts very small and grows over time. Unless a person had experience seeing a full-grown mustard bush it might be impossible to imagine all that’s contained in that tiny seed!

The same is true for considering how to decide where to commit myself for my future. What choice would allow me to express as fully as possible the gifts God has given me for the world? Here’s where the tiny seed comes into view. A call to life often shows up in very tiny, almost unnoticeable ways. It could be just a flash of imagining – “what if...?” Or a wish to make a difference in peoples’ lives. Or a desire for not just a life of service, but one grounded in prayer and reflection as well as a community of support.

These fleeting thoughts and longings are the seeds of call. As you settle into the process of discerning, it is important to pay attention to these seeds, bring them to prayer, perhaps journal with them, dream with them and talk them over with trusted guides/companions. As you do this, the seeds are nurtured and grow larger in your awareness, until it’s time to take a next step on the journey.

Las Más Pequeñas Semillas

El Evangelio del domingo pasado contó la historia de la pequeña semilla de mostaza que comienza muy pequeña y crece con el tiempo. A menos que una persona tenga la experiencia de ver un arbusto de mostaza completamente desarrollado, ¡podría ser imposible imaginar todo lo que contiene esa pequeña semilla!

Lo mismo es cierto para considerar cómo decidir dónde comprometerme para mi futuro. ¿Qué opción me permitiría expresar lo más plenamente posible los dones que Dios me ha dado para el mundo? Aquí es donde aparece la pequeña semilla. Un llamado a la vida muchas veces se manifiesta de formas muy pequeñas, casi imperceptibles. Podría ser solo un destello de imaginación: “¿y si ...? . .? ”. O el deseo de marcar una diferencia en la vida de las personas. O el deseo no solo de una vida de servicio, sino de una vida basada en la oración y la reflexión, así como en una comunidad de apoyo.

Estos pensamientos y anhelos fugaces son las semillas del llamado. A medida que se acomoda en el proceso del discernimiento, es importante prestar atención a estas semillas, llevarlas a la oración, tal vez escribir un diario con ellas, soñar con ellas y conversar sobre ellas con guías / compañeras de confianza. Al hacer esto, las semillas se nutren y se hacen más grandes en su conciencia, hasta que llega el momento de dar el siguiente paso en la jornada.

While mesmerized by the movement of a stream near Birney Falls in northern California, I was captured by its rippling sounds. I couldn’t help taking a photo of a large boulder in the middle of that stream. What stood out to me was the way the water found a way around the boulder, huge as it was. It did not stop the flow of the water’s journey.

At some points in the process of making life decisions, we are confronted by doubts, some are boulder-sized. I’m referring to those bothersome feelings that create disruption in an otherwise smooth forward movement toward our goals. Those doubts can cause us to wonder if we’re making the “right” choice. 

If we take a lesson from the stream, doubts invite us to pause, to assess what’s happening or what’s in the way, to name the doubts and perhaps talk them over with a spiritual director or mentor. Writing the doubts in a journal can also help. Like the water in the stream, once the doubts (boulders) are given a name, that very act of naming gives us clues about what to do next to move forward. In a sense the water “figured out” it had to go around the boulder since it couldn’t go over or through it.

Haga Una Pausa Para Las Dudas, No Se Detenga

Mientras estaba hipnotizada por el movimiento de un arroyo cerca de Birney Falls en el norte de California, fuí capturada por sus sonidos ondulantes. No pude evitar tomar una foto de una gran piedra en medio de ese arrollo. Lo que me llamó la atención fue la forma en que el agua encontró un camino alrededor de la gran piedra, por enorme que fuera. No detuvo el flujo del viaje del agua.

En algunos momentos durante el proceso de tomar decisiones en la vida, nos enfrentamos a dudas, algunas son de tamaños de piedras enormes. Me refiero a esos molestos sentimientos que crean una interrupción en un movimiento hacia adelante a cumplir nuestros objetivos. Esas dudas pueden hacer que nos preguntemos si estamos tomando la decisión "correcta".

Si tomamos una lección de la corriente, las dudas nos invitan a tomar una pausa, a evaluar lo que está sucediendo o lo que se interpone, a nombrar las dudas y tal vez conversarlas con un director espiritual o un mentor. Escribir las dudas en un diario también puede ayudar. Al igual que el agua en el arroyo, una vez que se les da un nombre a las dudas (piedras enormes), ese mismo acto de nombrar nos da señales sobre qué hacer a continuación para seguir adelante. En cierto sentido, el agua "se dió cuenta" de que tenía que rodear más audazmente la piedra enorme, ya que no podía pasar por encima o por dentro de ella.
