"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you...
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

John 14:27

As we sing "Let there be peace on Earth...," our hearts remember you in prayer with abundant gratitude. We pray that you and your loved ones find moments of peace throughout the Christmas season and well into the New Year.

If you haven't yet made a year-end donation to support the ministries and Mission of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, you still have time. If you have already given this holiday season, we are incredibly grateful.

Thank you for blessing our Sisters in so many ways. Please enjoy these special messages of peace and gratitude from our Sisters living at the Motherhouse.

Sisters Bring Peace to Hearts of Others through a Variety of Ministries

Seek truth, make peace, reverence life. These words are in the opening of the Vision Statement that the Adrian Dominican Sisters approved in 2004. The three related calls still drive the actions of Sisters, Associates, and other Partners in Mission to this day.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has been in turmoil – and so have the personal lives and hearts of many people. Adrian Dominican Sisters and Associates strive to be peace makers, to bring peace to the troubled hearts of the people they encounter and serve.

Sister Janet Fulgenzi, OP, PhD, licensed clinical psychologist at a mental health clinic in Saginaw, Michigan, meets with clients who, even before the pandemic, struggled with anxiety and depression. Her mission is to assist them in learning and practicing coping skills – such as relaxation, mindfulness, assertiveness, and increased self-esteem – to help them manage their emotional pain more effectively. “They learn ways to empower and free themselves to make choices that are healthier for them,” she said. These skills bring more awareness, more peace, more self-acceptance, and an increased ability to be and to grow. People who seek therapy are “very brave and courageous,” Sister Janet said. “It is a real gift to be with them as they gain insight and understanding and pursue change.”

Sister Janet Doyle, OPAs Director of Weber Retreat and Conference Center, Sister Janet Doyle, OP, reached out during the pandemic to bring peace to the various groups that she serves. “We try to create an atmosphere that is peaceful,” Sister Janet said. She and her staff helped to plan a variety of activities designed to “lighten up a difficult time” for both Sisters and Co-workers at the Motherhouse Campus. “We worked really hard this past year to bring to the Sisters and the public meaningful, stimulating, inspiring programs and speakers,” Sister Janet said. The Holy Week Retreat alone reached 162 people from throughout the United States and beyond – far more than the normal 40-50 participants who attended the in-person retreat, Sister Janet said.

Sister Esther Kennedy, OPSister Esther Kennedy, OP, cultivates peace in participants of her monthly Day of Mindfulness program, offered through Weber Center. Through mindfulness meditation, we “come into the present moment and to our breath, become mindful of all that is happening, and learn to hold it all lightly, with an open heart,” Sister Esther said. “Mindfulness can help us be with the suffering and open our hearts enough to experience it with others, to do our part to be kind, to be less harsh and judging of others.” Many participants have told Sister Esther that mindfulness helped them to quiet their minds of judgment, bringing them a deeper peace. In turn, Sister Esther said, we can all cultivate peace in the world. “We were created to be channels of peace to each other,” she said. “God doesn’t have to make us that – that’s who we are. We just have to wake up to that.”
