Working Together for
the Good of the Community

Sister Mary Kay Homan

Mary Kay Homan, OP, is inspired by great discussions, the kind that challenge people to think and act. In the few months that she’s been on the General Council, Sister Mary Kay has been excited by the interactions she’s had with others on how to make Vision 2004 a reality.

“It’s been a very powerful, positive experience working together,” Sister Mary Kay said. “I don’t see how we can fail to have wonderful things happen, because there is so much talent, dedication and good will.”

Stating that it’s the responsibility of every member to live out the mission and Vision of the Congregation, Sister Mary Kay said it’s important “to listen to the prophetic voices among us — the people who may be doing things a little differently, or who come from a different vantage point, or who see things as a whole. Those are the conversations we need to have.”
Sister Mary Kay said that as a Councilor, her role is to facilitate that process and offer help and support, even if it means being on the sidelines at times. “One of my favorite prayers as a principal was, ‘Lord, help me to get out of the way and let other people use their gifts,’” she said. “The five of us don’t have all the answers.”

Sister Mary Kay’s areas of responsibility include Regina Dominican High School, Dominican High School and Academy, St. Joseph and Rosarian academies, the Development and Ministry Trust offices, and the Sponsorship Commission. Her ministry brings her in contact with Adrian Dominicans and their ministries, and enables her to witness firsthand how committed the sisters are to the people they’re serving. Sister Mary Kay said she takes pride in what the sisters are doing, and supports them in whatever ways she can, just as they support her. “I’m not called to be in Africa, or to be in the inner city, or to work in a clinic,” Sister Mary Kay said, “but my sisters are there, so I’m there.”

One of the aspects of being an Adrian Dominican that Sister Mary Kay finds so enriching is the sense of community she shares with Congregation members. “The sisters whom I’ve lived, worked, prayed, and been part of a Mission Group with, have always been a source of support and challenge,” Sister Mary Kay noted. “I’ve been blessed with very good friends.”
