Spirituality and the Elder Years
Monday – April 19, 2010 - 4:00 PM to
Thursday – April 22, 2010– 1:00 PM
There are many definitions of spirituality most of which refer to spirituality as the wholeness of the person in relation to body, mind and spirit. Teilhard de Chardin has captured something of the very essence of spirituality and aging in referring to it as intimacy with God during the later years of life.
During this time of retreat we will explore the spiritual and personal journey we take into the later years of life. How have I used and continue to use the gifts God has given me? What is the wisdom I want to synthesize from long life experience and formulate into a legacy for future generations?
Mary C. Hopkins, OP is a Dominican Sister of the Congregation of Sinsinawa Wisconsin. Mary has worked for many years in the fields of aging and spirituality. In addition to preaching retreats, Mary has a counseling and spiritual direction practice. Mary holds a Masters Degree in Counseling/Spirituality from Loyola University in Baltimore MD.

Understanding Islam in America
Wednesday, 7:00 PM - Friday, 1:00 PM
Is there only one Islam? What about denominations? Cultures? Beliefs and practices? Islam in America has religious, political and sociological complexities that defy simple understanding. These complexities will be explored in order to deepen the understanding of what it means for immigrants to be Muslims in America, and what it means to be an American convert to Islam and how the two comprise a distinctly North American understanding of Islam. The seminar will explore Muslim religious and cultural roots that inform their self-understanding of Islam in America. A panel of Muslim men and women will discuss their experiences, beliefs and practices as well as their hopes for peace.
Susan Van Baalen, OP, a Dominican Sister of Adrian, began her study of Abrahamic religions when her ministry included the protection of religious rights for people of all faiths. The Middle East crisis focused the need for religious tolerance on Judaism and Islam. Susan is currently researching materials for her doctoral dissertation on Islam in America. After a ministry career in prison chaplaincy, Susan now serves as a consultant on Muslims in American Prisons and as a ECOSOC NGO representative with consultative status. She has recently consulted with French prison and embassy officials on the management of Muslims in French prisons.

“Voices of our Biblical Mothers: Women of the Old Testament”
Friday, 7:00 PM – Sunday, 1:00 PM
Long invisible and often little appreciated, women of the Old Testament have vital stories to share. These ancient yet ever-new narratives challenge us to experience the stories afresh and re-engage the forgotten voices of these women. We meet mothers, sisters, slaves, midwives, prostitutes, prophetesses, queens, victims of rape, and immigrants. In meeting them, we may well meet ourselves!
Chosen to participate in God’s unfolding plan, these significant and seemingly insignificant women are models of endurance and faithfulness, vision and wisdom, leadership and strength. They invite us into conversation and beckon contemplation as we discern our role in today’s challenging times.
In the course of the workshop, we will:
- revisit the power of story and how these biblical portraits are being interpreted afresh today;
- encounter each biblical woman in “her world” in the context of the biblical narrative;
- experience each woman through the creative interpretation of dramatic monologue;
- engage in personal reflection and conversation to discover the message that each Old Testament woman has for us.
Prepare to meet Eve, Sarah, the midwives of Exodus, Miriam and Ruth!
Please bring a Bible to the workshop.

“We Live Inside a Story! Do you know what story you are in?”
Friday 7:30 PM – Sunday 1:00 PM
The title for this weekend is based on Matrushka dolls (nesting dolls) from Russian and Eastern Europe. We tell our stories, the smallest doll and then work our way out … family, friends, small groups, work, parish, state, country, etc. What would our stories sound like and how would we tell them if we started at the other end with the largest/deepest/truest stories, i.e., the Trinity, the Universe, the Incarnation, the Pascal Mystery, the Spirit in the world, the Spirit in the Church in the world, the Spirit in our worlds, and then the stories we are used to telling?
Come be amazed and learn other ways to tell our story.

Piece Work – Soul Work (Quilting Retreat)
Friday, 7:30 PM – Sunday,1:00 PM
Through conversation, sharing and journaling we will explore the awakenings we have experienced in our lives. Those moments, persons, and words – spoken or written – that have made an impact on our spirituality, how we live our lives, and how we treat others. What is it that has reminded us to practice mercy rather than judging others? What words leapt off the page just when you needed them? And what words did Jesus whisper in answer to your prayer? What causes us to look at others through Christ’s eyes or see Him when we look into the face of others? Together we will share and explore our personal experiences that have taken place on life’s journey.
Ann Hughes believes that piece work and soul work go hand in hand, that both are creative acts of the individual spirit. She has been quilting since 1989. Currently, Ann serves as President and CEO of the Adrian Chamber of Commerce.
Barbara Harvey has over 25 years of experience in crafts and quilting. She has worked in local fabric and quilt shops where she has taught several classes on quilting, crafts and basic sewing.
