Hydration Stations Help Reduce Plastic Waste at Barry University
Specify Alternate Text

April 12, 2018, Miami Shores, Florida – In an effort to reduce plastic waste generated by the use of disposable water bottles, hydration stations have been installed throughout the campus at Barry University. Barry’s Ecological Sustainability Team (BEST) announced that the hydration stations have been installed in high-traffic areas of the campus, and more stations will continue to be installed.

To encourage the use of these hydration stations, eco-friendly Barry Green reusable water bottles are distributed to incoming students, faculty, and staff during orientations each semester.

Americans use an average of 50 billion water bottles each year, but only 23 percent are recycled, leaving 38 billion to be placed in the landfills. The hydration stations will help members of the Barry community to reduce the use of disposable water bottles.

Throughout April, Earth Justice Month, members of BEST are announcing other sustainability events or initiatives at Barry. Special events include:

  • The opportunity to join the Student Green Team and become involved in Barry’s sustainability practices.
  • Earth Day Tropical Oasis, which features eco-friendly activities, food, games, and vendors at Barry’s campus mall.
  • A day of service with opportunities for students to become involved in local community projects that uphold the sacredness of Earth while serving local organizations.
  • Earth Justice Mass: Care for Creation.
  • Stop Food Waste Day, in which Barry community members have the opportunity to participate in a national movement to stop food waste.

Throughout the month, members of the Barry community will have the opportunity to drop off books in Better World Books collection boxes in the library and in other buildings throughout campus, and to view the library display, “End Plastic Pollution.”

Sustainability is one of the Enactments of the 2016 General Chapter of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, which founded and sponsors Barry University.
