Girl Scout Inspires Dignity Health to Reduce Use of Plastic Straws, Stir Sticks

December 27, 2017, San Francisco, California – A Girl Scout with a passion to eliminate one-time use plastics inspired Dignity Health to eliminate plastic straws and stir sticks from all of the cafeterias in its 39-hospital system. Sister Mary Ellen Leciejewski, OP, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility for Dignity Health, said it was an issue the Sustainability Team had not considered before Girl Scout Shelby O’Neil brought it to their attention, simply because of other priorities such as toxics management or figuring out how to recycle the "blue wrap" used to sterilize surgical tools.
