By Sister Mary Jean Williams, OP
Director of Mission Integration, Regina Dominican High School

May 21, 2018, Wilmette, Illinois – The Dominican Preachers of Regina Dominican High School were invited to a prayer service as a thank you to graduating preachers and welcome to eight new preachers: three rising sophomores, three rising juniors, and two rising seniors.

The students entered a prayer circle as current preachers placed a lit candle in a circle around a large candle. The graduating preachers called forth the new preachers to live out the Dominican charism and pillars as they placed their candle in the circle. The service closed with the Dominican Blessing.

Following prayer the graduating preachers were thanked for their ministry to the Regina Dominican High School community and for achieving the goals they had developed at the Dominican High Schools Preaching Conference, held in Adrian, Michigan in June 2017:

  • To discover and deepen the preacher within each one by increasing their participation at Mass as readers, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers and ushers.
  • To challenge the school community to live out the Gospel message.
  • To connect with Dominican roots by being pen pals with Adrian Dominican Sisters who have ministered at Regina Dominican and are now in Adrian.
  • To form a network of Dominican Preachers in the Chicagoland area.

In their preacher application forms, some of the new preachers mentioned how they admired the enthusiasm of the preachers as they shared talks on the Dominican pillars, modeled the spirit of Dominican hospitality, and offered personal reflections on the Dominican charism at Masses.

The preachers also undertook many service trips and projects during the school year, including packing food at Feed My Starving Children and the Chicago Depository, making baby blankets for the women’s shelter, assisting Big Shoulders in a Give Back Day at Queen of the Universe Catholic School, and participating in a day of service to Visitation Elementary School.

Three of the preachers will attend the Dominican High Schools Preaching Conference in Adrian this year with June Lisa Boris, the Campus Minister.
