In Memoriam


Sister Dorothy Jehle, formerly known as Sister Norbert Mary Jehle, died on April 18, 2017, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 96 years of age and in the 71st year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Dorothy was born in Chicago to Herman and Dorothy (Elvin) Jehle. She graduated from St. Francis Academy in Joliet, Illinois, and received a bachelor’s degree in English from St. Francis College in Joliet, Illinois; a bachelor’s degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian; a master’s degree in English from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio; and a doctorate in English from Loyola University in Chicago. 

Sister Dorothy spent 41 years ministering in education in Detroit and Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan; Elgin, Illinois; and Miami Shores, Florida. She was assistant principal for six years at St. Edward School High School in Elgin, and for five years at St. Paul High School in Grosse Pointe Farms. 

Sister Dorothy ministered at two Congregation institutions: five years at Dominican High School in Detroit and 40 years at Barry College (University) in Miami Shores, Florida, where she was a professor for 20 years and the archivist for 20 years.

Sister Dorothy became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2011. She is survived by loving nieces and nephews.

Welcome of Sister Dorothy will be on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dominican Life Center lobby; the Wake will follow from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Room. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Prayer will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Friday, April 21, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. Both the Vigil Prayer and the Funeral will be live streamed. The Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
