In Memoriam


(1931-2018)

Sister Betty Jenkins, formerly known as Sister Mary Mathia Jenkins, died on Friday, May 25, 2018, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 86 years of age and in the 68th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Betty was born in Detroit to Maurice and Lois (Peters) Jenkins. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a master’s degree in English from the University of Detroit (Detroit-Mercy). She held certificates in religious studies from Siena Heights College (University) and in pastoral ministry from Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Orchard Lake, Michigan. She was a Licensed Certified Social Worker in the State of Michigan.

Sister ministered in elementary and secondary education for 22 years in East Lansing, Saginaw and Detroit, Michigan. She was a pastoral minister for 13 years at St. Michael Parish in Grand Ledge, Michigan. 

Sister Betty ministered for 7½ years in the Activities Department at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She worked at the Siena Literacy Center in Detroit, Michigan for 11½ years in marketing and publicity and as a hospitality coordinator. 

Sister Betty became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Everett John Jenkins and Maurice Jenkins. She is survived by three sisters, Althea Lanuzza of Mt. Clements, Michigan, and Carole Lovell and Helen Kaiser, both of Wolverine Lake, Michigan.

Welcome of Sister Betty will be on Monday, June 4, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dominican Life Center lobby; the Wake will follow from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Room. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Prayer will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. Both the Vigil Prayer and the Funeral Mass will be live streamed. The Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
