Sister Jude Van Baalen, OP

(1939-2017)

Sister Jude Van Baalen, formerly known as Jude Marie Van Baalen, died on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 78 years of age and in the 59th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister was born in Detroit to Edward and Susan (Flanagan) Van Baalen. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and received a bachelor’s degree in speech from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Religious Education degree from Seattle University. 

Sister Jude ministered in elementary education for 10 years in Munising and Escanaba, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; and Solen, North Dakota. She also served for 45½ years in a variety of pastoral ministries in Adrian, Detroit, New Baltimore, and Sterling Heights, Michigan; Solen, North Dakota; Sherburn and Tracy, Minnesota; and Prince George, BC, Canada. This includes serving for six years as Director of Candidates for the Adrian Dominican Sisters and five years as a professor at Siena Heights College.

Sister Jude was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Edward, and her Sister Mary. She is survived by brothers Paul of Warren and Marc of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, and two sisters: Ann Bertolini of Hudson, Florida, and Sister Susan Van Baalen, also an Adrian Dominican Sister.

Welcome of Sister Jude will be on Thursday, November 16, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dominican Life Center lobby; the Wake will follow from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Room of the Dominican Life Center. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Prayer will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Friday, November 17, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. Both the Vigil and the Funeral will be live-streamed. The Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
