In Memoriam


(1943-2016)

Sister Sharon McGuire was born on September 14, 1943, in Detroit. She was the first and only girl of the four children born to Robert and Jean (Melvin) McGuire. In her autobiography, Sister Sharon shared some significant memories of her early years.

The day my father appeared in the doorway, I believe home from the war, is still a sharp image in my memory. It is the first remembrance I have of him, and the concomitant feelings were both surprise and delight. During the time my father was in the war, WW II, my mother had to work and I had to go to nursery school.

(1938-2016)

Baptized Rosa Custo, Sister Viviana was born on June 23, 1938, in the Village of Għarb on Gozo Island which is part of the island-nation of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. She was the second of nine children born to Joseph and Anna (Mercieca) Custo. The Constitution of Malta establishes Catholicism as the state religion and it is also reflected in various elements of Maltese culture.

(1928-2016)

Sister Patricia Cecile Slattery was born on August 26, 1928, in St. Joseph, Michigan.  Baptized Patricia Jean, she was the youngest of three children born to Clifford and Opal (Taylor) Slattery. Her father was born in Stevensville, Michigan, and worked as an electrician. Her mother was born in Lafayette, Indiana. Opal was a convert and worked in a factory so their children could attend Catholic school.  Patricia her brother John Thomas and sister Mary Catherine attended St. Joseph School from grades one through twelve.

Rose Irene Calvert(1938 - 2015)

Sister Rose Irene, baptized Mary Ann Calvert, was born on November 14, 1937, in Detroit. She was the fourth of five children born to Leon and Veronica (Good) Calvert.  In her autobiography, Sister Rose wrote the following about her family.

My father came to this country as a young adult from Munich, Germany.  Actually, his last name was Schweitzer which he quickly changed upon his arrival [because he was] afraid he would be sent back to his own country. My father was a printer by trade, but later he and my Mom managed their own Calvert 5¢ to $1 Stores...

Cemetery of the Adrian Dominican Sisters

Our Adrian Dominican cemetery with its circular headstones is a beautiful place of rest for women who gave their lives in service to God—and a peaceful place for contemplation and remembrance.
