In Memoriam

(1933 - 2015)

Sister Patricia J. Walsh, born on June 15, 1933, in Chicago, was the first of four children born to John and Patricia (Sullivan) Walsh. Her father was a city fireman and her mother, before they were married, was a comptometer operator. Sister Pat said, “Today she would have worked on a computer.”

In her autobiography, Sister Pat emphasized the family’s long relationship with St. Columbanus Parish.  She wrote:

My mother was the first baby baptized at St. Columbanus Church and I was baptized there also on July 2, 1933. I attended St. Columbanus School as my mother, aunt and uncles had. We would live in that parish until the last month before I graduated and entered the Congregation.

(1926 - 2015)

Constance Kelly, known to her family and friends as Connie, was born on April 23, 1926, in Elgin, Illinois. She was the third of five children born to Elmer and Nina (Browne) Kelly. This is how Connie remembered her early days:

These were happy days. We lived in Cleveland and because my Dad sold advertising we were never [affected] by the Depression. I recall summer evenings when, after super, we would go for a ride through Rocky River and environs. My folks loved to sing so we learned many “oldies” as we rode in our Willys Knight. The car was large enough to accommodate us as we put camp stools in the back on the floor in front of the seat. We would buy chocolate chip ice cream to be enjoyed upon our return home.

(1939 - 2015)
Sister Barbara Ann Stanek was born in Chicago on April 4, 1939, the only child of Walter and Julia (Wiktor) Stanek. She grew up in Schiller Park, Illiois, and, in addition to the loving care of her parents, she enjoyed the love and affection of her extended family who gathered at her maternal grandparents’ home for periodic celebrations. All who knew Barbara were aware of her affection for her cousins, especially Vivian.

Barbara met the Adrian Dominicans when she attended St. Celestine School and, after graduating from eighth grade, she enrolled in the Congregation’s Preparatory Program at the age of fourteen and attended St. Joseph Academy.

(1925 - 2015)
I will be confident and unafraid, for my strength and my song is the Lord.

Sister Patricia McGrath, known to her friends as Pat, was born on November 16, 1924, in Royal Oak, Michigan, to John and Genevieve (Kuntz) McGrath. She was the fifth of their nine children. Both parents were born and raised in Pennsylvania, and lived one hundred miles apart. In her biography, Sister Pat wrote, “We have not figured out how mom and dad met being that they lived one hundred miles apart. Someone suggested they met at a roller skating party.”

Her parents lived in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, her mother’s birthplace, until after their fourth son was born and then they moved to Royal Oak, Michigan. In her biography, Sister Pat described this transition and the impact of the Depression on her family.
