In Memoriam


(1935-2020)

Sister Susan Mary Parker, formerly known as Sister Marie Annine Parker, died on April 28, 2020, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 84 years of age and in the 65th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Susan Mary was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, to Harold and Mary Ann (Stock) Parker. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and received a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree from Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan. 

Sister Susan Mary spent 15 years ministering in elementary education in Greenville, Newberry, Detroit, Chelsea, and Inkster, Michigan. She was a licensed practical nurse for 16 years at Detroit Memorial Hospital and a registered nurse for 11 years at Detroit Riverview Hospital. After retirement she became a companion and caregiver for her friend Doris Beach, an Adrian Dominican Associate, for many years.

Sister Susan Mary became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two brothers: Thomas Parker (Barbara) of Canton, Michigan, and John Parker (Susan) of Plano, Texas; one sister, Linda Parker of Saint Clair Shores, Michigan; loving nieces and nephews; and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Due to COVID-19 mitigation protocols, the Dominican Life Center is closed until further notice to all guests or visitors. All are welcome to participate in Sister’s wake and funeral via live stream

The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2020, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2020. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery.

(1928-2020)

Sister Sarah Cavanaugh, formerly known as Sister Michael Henry Cavanaugh, died on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 91 years of age and in the 72nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Sarah was born in Detroit to Harry and Alice (McNamara) Cavanaugh. She graduated from St. Paul High School in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, and received a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in education, both from Barry College (University) in Miami Shores, Florida.

Sister spent 56 years ministering in education in Chicago and Wilmette, Illinois; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Miami Shores, Florida; and Detroit and Adrian, Michigan. Sister was principal of St. Vincent De Paul School in Fort Wayne from 1962 to1967, St. Gerard Elementary School in Detroit from 1976 to1983, and Regina High School in Wilmette from 1983 to 1989. She was school supervisor in Detroit for two years, and Associate Vice President of Barry University in Miami Shores for 18 years.

In the 1970’s, Sister Sarah served for seven years as Provincial Administrator and Co-Provincial in Immaculate Conception Province in Detroit, Michigan. Recently, she ministered from 2007 to 2019, as an administrative assistant and volunteer at the Adrian Rea Literacy Center.

Sister Sarah became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Alice Higbee; and two brothers, Michael Cavanaugh and John Cavanaugh. She is survived by one sister, Sue Cavanaugh of Naples, Florida, and two brothers, Joseph Cavanaugh (Nancy) of Bloomfield Village, Michigan, Patrick Cavanaugh of Naples, Florida; loving nieces and nephews; and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.

The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery.

Sister Elizabeth “Betty” Gibbons, formerly known as Sister Claire Eugene Gibbons, died on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 83 years of age and in the 64th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Betty was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, to Eugene and Marie (Baribault) Gibbons. She graduated from Oak Park High School in Oak Park, Illinois. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Education degree and a master’s degree in computer management, both from Barry College (University), Miami Shores, Florida.

Sister spent 13 years ministering in elementary education in Homewood and Burbank, Illinois; and Tallahassee, Melbourne, Gulfport, St. Petersburg, and Palatka, Florida. She served as pastoral/parish minister in Joliet, Chicago, and Maywood, Illinois; and Tallahassee and Indian Rocks, Florida for 21 years. 

From 1982 to 1986, Sister Betty was social concerns director at Sacred Heart Parish in San Diego, California. She served at Barry University from 1986 to 1993 as campus minister, assistant director of residents and director of computer services.

Sister Betty became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan in 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Eugene Louis Gibbons. She is survived by two sisters: Claire Niebuhr of Bon Secours, Alabama and Marilyn Hunter of Sun City, Arizona; loving nieces and nephews and; her Adrian Dominican Sisters.

(1933-2020)

Sister Carolyn Nelson, formerly known as Sister Angelita Nelson, died on Monday, April 13, 2020, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 87 years of age and in the 67th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. 

Sister Carolyn was born in Chicago to Edward and Virginia (Schuster) Nelson. She graduated from St. Ambrose High School in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, and received a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, a master’s degree in history from DePaul University in Chicago, and a master’s  degree in pastoral counseling from Marygrove College in Detroit. 

Sister Carolyn spent 21½ years ministering in education in Chicago and St. Charles, Illinois; Des Moines, Iowa; and Owosso, Michigan. She was principal at St. Patrick School in St. Charles from 1965 to 1975 and religious education director there from 1979 to 1985. Sister Carolyn served as Provincial Administrator for the Adrian Dominican Sisters in St. Dominic Province in Hometown, Illinois from 1975 to 1979. She also was pastoral associate for 23 years at St. Owen Parish in Birmingham, Michigan. 

Sister Carolyn became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan in 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents and a cousin, Sister Marie Bernadette Kreiner, OP, an Adrian Dominican Sister. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Judith Verhaeghe of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; a loving nephew; and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.
