While we have in the Gospel an image of God’s Spirit appearing as a dove at Jesus’ Baptism, we don’t have that as the only image. 

In reality, the presence of the Holy Spirit is more often felt and experienced than seen with our eyes. When we have an insight or inspiration, we attribute that to the Spirit. When disparate things effortlessly come together, we may acknowledge, the Spirit brought it to completion. St. Paul tells us that the Spirit is experienced as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, forbearance, modesty, chastity, and self-control. 

Let’s take just one of those experiences for our purposes in discernment: patience. We need the Spirit’s help in being patient because discerning takes energy, consuming our attention at some stages. It might even cause us discomfort and frustration. Patience with the time it takes to discover and claim our desires for our lives and the Spirit’s desire for us is a gift of the Spirit.

May each of us have the patience and stamina needed to discern honestly where we belong and what are we called to commit to in life.

Esperando en Paciencia

Si bien tenemos en el Evangelio una imagen del Espíritu de Dios apareciendo como una paloma en el bautismo de Jesús, no la tenemos como la única imagen.

En realidad, muchas de las veces se siente y se experimenta la presencia del Espíritu Santo que con nuestros ojos. Cuando tenemos una idea o inspiración, la atribuimos al Espíritu. Cuando las cosas dispares se unen sin esfuerzo, podemos reconocerlo, el Espíritu lo completó. San Pablo nos dice que el Espíritu se experimenta como amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, bondad, fidelidad, gentileza, tolerancia, modestia, castidad, y autocontrol.

Tomemos solo una de esas experiencias para nuestros propósitos de discernimiento: paciencia. Necesitamos la ayuda del Espíritu para ser pacientes porque el discernimiento requiere energía y consume nuestra atención en algunas etapas. Incluso podría causarnos incomodidad y frustración. La paciencia con el tiempo que lleva descubrir y reclamar nuestros deseos para nuestras vidas y el deseo del Espíritu por nosotras es un don del Espíritu.

Que cada una de nosotras tenga la paciencia y la resistencia necesaria para discernir honestamente a dónde pertenecemos y a qué estamos llamadas a comprometernos en la vida.

I don’t know anyone else who had such a dramatic experience and revelation as Jesus did at his Baptism! We just heard the Gospel describe the event this past Sunday, so it might help to ponder further just what he may have experienced that we can take with us as we listen to our own desires and what God desires for us.

Jesus called our attention to this moment by first stepping forward and asking for this anointing as God’s Beloved. When we (or our parents and godparents) asked that we be baptized, we were invited more closely into following Jesus’ way of living. We may not have been aware, but as God’s beloved ourselves, we were chosen for something special in our lives, some mission that can only be fulfilled by us, no one else. 

As we discern just what that mission is for us, it is vital to pay attention to what our heart desires. What is it we long for? What matters to us? What do we really want to do in this world that has so many needs? Where do our gifts match needs of people around us? Or Earth’s needs? What is it we desire?

As with Jesus, we ask God for guidance in our discernment. Where and who can I serve best? 

Then, listen for God’s response to you, the beloved.

Llamada y Bendecida

iNo conozco a nadie más que haya tenido una experiencia y revelación tan dramática como lo tuvo Jesús en su bautismo! Acabamos de escuchar el Evangelio describir el evento el Domingo pasado, por lo que podría ser útil reflexionar más sobre lo que él pudo haber experimentado y que podamos llevar con nosotras mientras escuchamos nuestros propios deseos y lo que Dios desea para nosotras.

Jesús llamó nuestra atención a este momento dando un paso adelante y pidiendo esta unción como el Amado de Dios. Cuando nosotras (o nuestros padres y padrinos) pidieron que fueramos bautizadas, fuimos invitadas más de cerca a seguir la forma de vivir de Jesús. Puede que no nos hayamos dado cuenta, pero como amadas de Dios nosotras mismas, fuimos elegidas para algo especial en nuestras vidas, una misión que solo nosotras podemos cumplir, nadie más.

A medida que discernimos cuál es esa misión para nosotras, es vital prestar atención a lo que nuestro corazón desea. ¿Qué es lo que anhelamos? ¿Qué nos importa a nosotras? ¿Qué es lo que realmente queremos hacer en este mundo que tiene tantas necesidades? ¿Dónde coinciden nuestros dones con las necesidades de las personas que nos rodean? ¿O las necesidades de la Tierra? ¿Qué es lo que deseamos?

Al igual que con Jesús, le pedimos a Dios que nos guíe en nuestro discernimiento. ¿Dónde y a quién puedo servir mejor?

John the Baptist had quite a following of disciples who listened to him preach, watched him baptizing, and noticed the distinctive way he lived. Early in John’s Gospel, Jesus showed up, giving the Baptist a chance to do what was his calling, point the way to Jesus. The story goes on that two of John’s disciples heard him refer to Jesus as “Lamb of God” and out of curiosity they went over to meet Jesus. The Gospel then says, “…Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’” (John 1:35-39) 

When we’re discerning God’s call in our lives – maybe for our lives – we also are being asked the same question, “What are you looking for?” A solid, predictable career? Loads of income? Good health? A marriage partner? A meaningful life of service? A way to live your God-given gifts to the fullest? A life of adventure and making a difference in peoples’ lives? A way to give back to God all the love God has poured out in your life? A path to holiness? “Yes” you say.

Consider, then, a life that will be full of meaning and service, one that will develop the gifts you have been given and a community of women who will challenge and support your growth as a person, including a deepening spirituality and relationship with the same Jesus who asks the question posed above. If you are looking for a relationship with Jesus and wonder if it’s with the Dominican Sisters, you may want to do what the two disciples did, that is, “Come and See” where he is staying. April 17-19, 2020, we will be hosting a weekend of discernment here in Adrian where you will meet others searching for their responses to “What are you looking for?”

¿Cómo Responderá?

Juán el Bautista tenía muchos seguidores que lo escucharon predicar, lo vieron bautizar, y notaron la forma distintiva en que vivía. Al principio del Evangelio de Juán, Jesús apareció, dándole al Bautista la oportunidad de hacer lo que fué su llamado, señalar el camino a Jesús. La historia continúa que dos de los discípulos de Juán lo escucharon referirse a Jesús como "Cordero de Dios" y, por curiosidad, fueron a encontrarse con Jesús. El Evangelio luego dice: "... Jesús se volvió y vió los que le seguían, y les dijo: "¿Qué estás buscando? " (Juán 1:35-39)

Considere, pues, una vida que estará llena de sentido y servicio, una que desarrollará los dones que ha recibido y una comunidad de mujeres que desafiarán y apoyarán su crecimiento como persona, incluyendo una espiritualidad y una relación más profunda con el mismo Jesús que le hace la pregunta planteada anteriormente. With the holidays mostly behind us, family gatherings thin out for now. I’d like to suggest we pay attention to God’s clue in nature at this darker time of year. We can all benefit from slowing down a bit. We may sense a call from inside ourselves for rest and taking time from the busy-ness just past.

Prayer may appeal more at this time of year in the northern hemisphere. The darkness brings with it invitations to spend longer times pondering God’s calls, whether we are thinking about our life commitment or simply the next call in our lives. 

How do you sense God’s call in your life? Where is God leading you? These questions are good to reflect on until you’re clear enough to make a decision.

Listen well as did Samuel after he realized (with Eli’s help) that it was God who was calling him. In discernment we count on help from friends, family, and our community of faith to support our search for where God is leading us. Our part is to listen. This is why the dark time of year can be the best time for the quiet needed for this kind of listening.

El Tiempo Lento De La Naturaleza

Con la mayoría de las vacaciones ya terminadas, las reuniones familiares disminuyen por ahora. Me gustaría sugerir que prestemos atención a las indicaciones de Dios en la naturaleza en esta época más oscura del año. Todas podemos beneficiarnos de desacelerar un poco. Podemos sentir una llamada desde nuestro interior para descansar y tomar tiempo del ajetreo que ha pasado.

El llamado hacia la oración puede ser más fuerte en esta época del año en el hemisferio norte. La oscuridad trae consigo invitaciones para pasar más tiempo reflexionando sobre los llamados de Dios, ya sea que estemos pensando en nuestro compromiso de vida o simplemente en el próximo llamado en nuestras vidas.

¿Cómo siente el llamado de Dios en su vida? ¿A dónde la está guiando Dios? Es bueno reflexionar sobre estas preguntas hasta que esté suficientemente clara como para tomar una decisión.

Escuche bien como lo hizo Samuel después de darse cuenta (con la ayuda de Elí) de que era Dios quien lo estaba llamando. En el discernimiento, contamos con la ayuda de amigos, familiares y nuestra comunidad de fe para apoyar nuestra búsqueda hacia dónde Dios nos está guiando. Nuestra parte es escuchar. Es por eso que la época oscura del año puede ser el mejor momento para la tranquilidad necesaria para este tipo de escucha.

Once in a while when I go for a walk, I pick up a pinecone that’s dropped off a nearby evergreen tree. Once as I inspected the cone more closely, I discovered what squirrels have known for a long time: the cones hold hidden seeds. Each seed is full of promise for future life, no matter how large or small the cones are. 

The same also is true for each of us. Our lives hold seeds full of promise. These precious seeds can be hidden so deeply within us that we can’t see or recognize them at first. But they are there within us!

Even as we continue days in the long darkness of our northern winter, I’d like to invite you to move toward the light by planning to attend our April 17-19, 2020, weekend of discernment here in Adrian. Please consider giving yourself this sacred time apart to reflect on those hidden desires of your heart. 

These desires are the ones planted by the Spirit and just waiting for a time of silence so you can ponder them. This weekend gathering will provide such a time for you to listen – to yourself and others, for praying and examining those seeds of God’s calling that want to grow in you. Atraida Por La Luz Por Delante

De vez en cuando, cuando salgo a caminar, recojo un cono de pino que ha caído de un árbol de hoja perenne cercano. En una ocasión después de haber inspeccionado el cono más cerca, descubrí lo que las ardillas han sabido durante mucho tiempo: los conos contienen semillas ocultas. Cada semilla está llena de promesas para la vida futura, sin importar cuán grandes o pequeños sean los conos.

Lo mismo también es cierto para cada una de nosotras. Nuestras vidas tienen semillas llenas de promesas. Estas semillas preciosas pueden ocultarse tan profundamente dentro de nosotras que al principio no podemos verlas ni reconocerlas. ¡Pero están allí dentro de nosotras!

Incluso mientras continuamos días en la larga oscuridad de nuestro invierno del norte, me gustaría invitarlas a avanzar hacia la luz y planear asistir a nuestro fin de semana de discernimiento del 17 al 19 de Abril de 2020, aquí en Adrian. Looking back on our lives we notice a series of seemingly disparate events have begun to form patterns. These patterns include our routine practices, habits, mistakes, relationships, or dreams – no matter what the separate events are – they reveal that we were on a path all along.

Being aware is one way the Spirit works in guiding us. Because we’re fully engaged in our busy daily lives, it’s hard to notice this or that event as part of a pattern. We’re too close to see.

To see the emerging patterns, we need to take time for a retreat, a space and time to slow down, spending time in quiet to pray a bit and listen more. In that sacred space we begin noticing how God has been at work in us. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations, the season of Advent gives each of us a good reason to step back and take those moments of quiet, allowing us to really see, appreciate and give thanks for the unique work of God in our lives.

Viendo Lo Que Hay Allí

Mirando hacia atrás en nuestras vidas, notamos que una serie de eventos aparentemente dispares han comenzado a formar patrones. Estos patrones incluyen nuestras prácticas, hábitos, errores, relaciones o sueños de rutina-sin importar cuáles sean los eventos-revelan que siempre hemos estado en un camino.

Ser consciente es una forma en que el Espíritu trabaja en guiarnos. Debido a que estamos completamente involucradas en nuestras vidas diarias, es difícil notar este o aquel evento como parte de un patrón. Estamos demasiado cerca para ver.

Para ver los patrones emergentes, debemos tomarnos un tiempo para un retiro, un espacio y tiempo para reducir la velocidad, pasar tiempo en silencio para rezar un poco y escuchar más. En ese espacio sagrado comenzamos a notar cómo Dios ha estado obrando en nosotras. En medio del ajetreo de los preparativos Navideños, la temporada de Adviento nos da a cada una de nosotras una buena razón para dar un paso atrás y tomar esos momentos de silencio, permitiéndonos realmente ver, apreciar y dar gracias por la obra única de Dios en nuestras vidas.

Mary’s “yes” to the angel when told she was favored and chosen to bear the Son of God inspires us by its simple consent and its leap of faith into an uncertain future. We realize she couldn’t fully know or understand all the other things that would come her way because of her “yes.” Mary trusted God.

None of us when discerning our future path knows for certain that our decision is the right choice for us because there is no way to know the unknown. It is all about our willingness to trust God, who loves us. When we have done our best to listen to what the Holy Spirit has in mind for our lives, we step onto the path, continuing to trust in God’s love as we move forward.

In these days of Advent waiting we can allow ourselves extra time to welcome silence into our lives. Silence is God’s best way to communicate. Our listening and really hearing is best done in silence too.

May you be still enough to hear the still, small whispers of God, who loves you,

Comprometerse a la Confianza

El "sí" de María al ángel cuando le dijeron que era favorecida y elegida para engendrar al Hijo de Dios nos inspira por su simple consentimiento y su salto de fe hacia un futuro incierto. Nos damos cuenta de que ella no podía saber o comprender completamente todas las otras cosas que se le presentarían debido a su "sí". María confió en Dios.

Ninguna de nosotras al discernir nuestro futuro camino sabe con certeza que nuestra decisión es la mejor opción para nosotras porque no hay forma de saber lo desconocido. Se trata de nuestra voluntad de confiar en Dios, quien nos ama.

Cuando hemos hecho todo lo posible para escuchar lo que el Espíritu Santo tiene en mente para nuestras vidas, avanzamos en el camino, continuando confiando en el amor de Dios a medida que avanzamos.

En estos días de espera de Adviento podemos darnos más tiempo para darle la bienvenida al silencio a nuestras vidas. El silencio es la mejor manera de comunicarse de Dios. Escuchar y verdaderamente oír se también se hace mejor en silencio.

Que esté lo suficientemente quieta como para escuchar los pequeños y silenciosos susurros de Dios, quien la ama.

In the liturgical season of Advent, we begin a time of waiting for the coming again of Jesus into moments of our daily lives. Advent is like flower bulbs. These oddly-shaped forms are planted in the autumn here in the northern hemisphere, come up as tiny seedlings each spring and gradually blossom. Waiting throughout the long winter buried in darkness under the soil, they make themselves ready to blossom. Both darkness and waiting are essential to the fulfillment of their purpose. 

As we discern what God’s call is for our lives we do lots of waiting, praying, and listening without knowing just what the answer may be or when it will come to us. When we imagine these bulbs with personalities, we wonder what they are feeling as they wait. Like them we wait without knowing, sometimes feeling impatient, until the time is right. We’re not in control, just as the conditions needed for bulbs to grow are not controlled by the bulbs.

During Advent we’re invited to enter into the mystery, the darkness, and the waiting for the right time to receive the guidance we need.

Misterios en la Oscuridad

En la temporada litúrgica de Adviento, comenzamos un tiempo de espera de la venida de Jesús a momentos en nuestras vidas cotidianas. Adviento es como bulbos de flores. Estos bulbos de formas extrañas se plantan en otoño aquí en el hemisferio norte, surgen como pequeñas plántulas cada primavera y florecen gradualmente. Esperando durante todo el largo invierno enterrados en la oscuridad bajo la tierra, se preparan para florecer. Tanto la oscuridad como la espera son esenciales para el cumplimiento de su propósito.

A medida que discernimos cuál es el llamado de Dios para nuestras vidas, esperamos, oramos, y escuchamos mucho sin saber cuál puede ser la respuesta o cuándo nos llegará. Cuando imaginamos estos bulbos con personalidades, nos preguntamos, ¿Qué sienten mientras esperan? Al igual que ellos, esperamos sin saberlo, a veces sintiéndonos impacientes, hasta que sea el momento adecuado. No tenemos el control, al igual que las condiciones necesarias para que los bulbos crezcan no están controladas por los bulbos.

Durante el Adviento, estamos invitadas a entrar en el misterio, la oscuridad, y la espera del momento adecuado para recibir la guianza que necesitamos.

With the celebration of Thanksgiving here in the U.S. we seem to be surrounded by messages of thanks and various ways to thank each other. While most messages I’ve seen or heard are aimed at families, friends, and neighbors, it wouldn’t hurt to widen our lenses to see everyone as deserving of our thanks.

Especially at this time of year I want us to be aware of the Giver of all gifts. We receive so many gifts every day that it’s not humanly possible to notice all of them, no matter how hard we try. 

In the process of discernment, the generous gifts of God accompany us. A gift arrives when we need to see clearly, to listen well, to read just the right bit of wisdom, or to meet up by chance with people who know us well – and who ask us just the right questions at the right time. These are all gifts from our Loving God, gifts that are more than we asked for and more than we can ever pay attention to. This is why the annual celebration of this particular holiday is so important.

So, let’s thank God for the plentiful gifts we’re showered with – especially, those who are discerning today God’s call for their lives. May each of us trust these important gifts that just show up! We remember Isaiah’s message from God: “...because you are precious in my sight...and because I love you...” (Isaiah 43:4)

Agradecer al Dador de Regalos

Con la celebración del Día de Acción de Gracias aquí en los Estados Unidos, parece que estamos rodeadas de mensajes de agradecimiento y varias formas de agradecernos mutuamente. Mientras la mayoría de los mensajes que he visto o escuchado están dirigidos a familias, amigas y vecinas, no estaría de más ampliar nuestros lentes para ver que todos merecen nuestro agradecimiento.

Especialmente en esta época del año, quiero que seamos conscientes del Dador de todos los regalos. Recibimos tantos regalos todos los días que no es humanamente posible notarlos todos, no importanta que tanto lo intentemos.

En el proceso de discernimiento, los generosos dones de Dios nos acompañan. Un regalo llega cuando necesitamos ver con claridad, o escuchar bien, o leer la sabiduría adecuada, o reunirnos por casualidad con personas que nos conocen bien – y que nos hacen las preguntas correctas en el momento adecuado. Todos estos son regalos de nuestro Dios amoroso, regalos que son más de lo que habíamos pedido y más de lo que podemos prestar atención. Es por eso que la celebración anual de esta fiesta en particular es tan importante.

Así que, demos gracias a Dios por los abundantes dones con los que nos hemos duchado – especialmente aquellas que están discerniendo hoy el llamado de Dios para sus vidas. ¡Que cada una de nosotras confiemos en estos importantes regalos que aparecen repentinamente! Recordemos el mensaje de Isaías departe de Dios: "...porque eres preciosa a mi vista... y porque te amo…”(Isaías 43:4)

One of my favorite passages in Scripture is in St. John’s Gospel, the 15th chapter: “You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”

Observing any kind of fruit tree: berry or apple, for instance, through the seasons, we notice that berries don’t suddenly appear in the spring or summer. They become fruit after the winter thaw, the spring rains, the increasing amount of daily sunshine and loads of leaves that nourish both the tree and the blossoms that precede the budding fruit. In other words, the fruit comes as a result of a process of growth. It is the way we also come to the fruit of knowledge for our lives.

One of the fruits of discernment is clarity that propels us forward with more confidence in our choices. None of the time we invest is wasted when we’re discerning what God may be calling us to do in life. It all bears fruit that will affect our perspective, our choices and the experience we have with God the rest of our lives. Why not spend some time this week thinking about – or noticing – fruit? Whether you see fruit growing or see the fruits of growth, give thanks to God who nourishes us with life all the time in so many ways!

Dando Fruto Que Permanece

Uno de mis pasajes favoritos en las Escrituras está en el Evangelio de San Juan, el capítulo 15: "No me elegiste a mí, pero yo te elegí a ti. Y te designé para que fueras y llevaras fruto, fruto que durará, para que el Padre te dé lo que tú pidas en mi nombre.”

Observando cualquier tipo de árbol frutal: bayas o manzanas, por ejemplo, a través de las estaciones del año, notamos que las bayas no aparecen repentinamente en la primavera o el verano. Se convierten en fruta después del deshielo de invierno, las lluvias de primavera, la creciente cantidad de sol diario y un montón de hojas que nutren tanto el árbol como las flores que preceden a la fruta en ciernes. En otras palabras, la fruta viene como resultado de un proceso de crecimiento. Es la forma en que también nosotras llegamos al fruto del conocimiento para nuestras vidas.

Uno de los frutos del discernimiento es la claridad que nos impulsa hacia adelante con más confianza en nuestras decisiones. El tiempo que invertimos nunca es en vano cuando discernimos lo que Dios puede estar llamándonos a hacer en la vida. Todo da fruto que afectará nuestra perspectiva, nuestras elecciones y la experiencia que tenemos con Dios el resto de nuestras vidas. ¿Por qué no tomar tiempo esta semana pensando – o notando – la fruta? Ya sea que vea frutas en crecimiento o los frutos del crecimiento, ¡dale gracias a Dios quien nos nutre de vida todo el tiempo de muchas maneras!
