A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

female friends embracing in a meadow

It is no secret that discerning any important decision, such as entering religious life, takes time – time spent in the quiet, time spent in prayer, and time spent in solitude for sure. However, there is another gift in the discernment journey that sometimes goes unnoticed. That is sharing the journey with others.

God many times speaks to us through the wisdom of others. An important step on the discernment journey is to invite others to walk with you. A person or people with whom you have a trusting relationship, who know you well, and who will speak truth to you are an invaluable instrument in the discernment journey. These are friends, or perhaps family members, who may see something in you that you do not see in yourself, yet. These people are usually honored to be a part of your discernment journey. So, look around you. Who might be your companions on the journey?

two figures putting together a puzzle

Thinking and praying are overrated unless there are some experiences to think and pray about! Many times during the discernment process we are encouraged to pray about what God wants of us or to think about what we would like to do that’s meaningful.

For example, you are being interviewed for a commercial about a certain type of food that you’ve never tasted. You could guess what it would taste like. You could compare it to other foods you’ve tasted that look like this food. You could even imagine how eating this food would make you feel. But if you never taste it for yourself you won’t really know the food. Your evaluation on every level would ring hollow. Chances are they wouldn’t hire you to star in this commercial!

The same is true in choosing how to spend your life in a meaningful way. At some point all the thinking and praying won’t give you the depth of information you need to make an authentic choice. You will need to try it for yourself. Your own experience of the life form known as religious life, in our case Dominican life, will be what gives you enough information about whether this is a fit, whether this is how God is calling you to live. We’ll be glad to help you with this. Just be in touch.

Pensar y Orar Son Sobrevalorados

Podría adivinar a qué sabría.

This week, we celebrate the World Day of Consecrated Life. This day falls on February 2, although many celebrations take place the following Sunday. Consecrated life takes many forms, but include religious sisters and brothers, consecrated virgins and widows, societies of apostolic life and secular institutes. Those who enter into consecrated life profess vows as a way of entering into their baptismal call in a new way.

This day provides us with the opportunity to reflect on why God calls some people to consecrated life, and what this way of life means for the life of the Church. My own experience of living religious life is that the vows I have made are the way that I am called into deeper relationship with God and neighbor, and, in turn, my deeper understanding calls me serve God and my neighbor. These articles talk about ways that some people have understood their lives through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience:

Person holding a brown gift box with white bow

A couple of weeks ago, I watched Disney’s movie, Encanto, with my community. In the movie, each member of the family receive a magical gift when they turn five years old, and this reminded me of the importance of gifts within our lives. Each of us have also received gifts, whether a talent for math or an ability to listen well; however, sometimes we have a difficult time recognizing what our gifts might be. Sometimes our gifts are not recognized by those around us, sometimes we do not have the opportunity to foster a particular gift that requires learning and practicing skills, and sometimes we simply have not had the opportunity to have a gift called forth from us.

Taking time to recognize and acknowledge our gifts is one of the first steps of discernment, and one that we return to many times throughout our life. The ability to know our gifts provides clarity in identifying where God might be calling us and helps us know what possibilities are attractive to us. Some questions that might help us to begin this process are:

  • What sparks joy in my life?

  • What have other people noticed that I do well?

  • What talents have I nurtured with my resources of time, money and passion?

  • What qualities do I notice in myself when I’m at my best?

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine

Woman listening to music with her eyes closed

“Silence is sometimes the best answer,” a quote from the Dalai Lama. I have it posted in my office. I think he is trying to remind us of the importance of listening to God. I come back to this quote when I am overcome with busyness. It reminds me of the importance of silence in my life, in listening for God’s voice. Sometimes silence is difficult to get to. Life can be so full of demands of our time coming from different directions. How do I find time for quiet when my schedule is too full? Discerning any decision needs time in the quiet, time to listen to voice of God. When life is too hectic, and I know I need quiet I have found that music helps me get there. Sometimes it involves a transition of time and space. Music has a calming effect on me, reminding me to slow down and breathe.

Listening to a favorite song instrumental or with meaningful lyrics brings me to a stillness that allows me to enter into the quiet. The difficult answers are found in the silence. One of my favorite songs is Father Liam Lawton’s In the Quiet. As the lyrics proclaim, “know that I am with you to call you to the quiet ... you will find your answer if you come into the quiet.” Whatever way brings you to the quiet, to the silence, it is important to make the time.

Green road sign with three arrows pointing in different directions

Of course, as Christians we are each called, just as the Apostles were, to follow the ways of Jesus. So why would a young woman join a religious congregation if she can do what Jesus called the Apostles and early followers to do without joining one?

She makes that choice because she senses a call from the Holy Spirit to follow Jesus this way. In a particular group of women she feels both supported in the work she is called to do and challenged when she faces all the obstacles she meets along the way.

Just as with Jesus’ call of his first followers, we each receive a call to follow Jesus in a specific way. Pray to be open to seeing and hearing the call and for the courage to follow in the way you are drawn.

You have all you need for this journey. Our Sisters are praying for you to hear the call when it comes to you and for your courage to follow this unique way of life. This brief video may give you some insights that can help as you sort out where and to what you are called.

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

The top of a wooden doorway bearing the chalk writing 20+M+C+B+22

There is a tradition of blessing the doorways of a home on Epiphany, signing the doorway with the initials, “C.M.B.,” which can stand for the magi – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar – or Christus mansionum benedicat, meaning “Christ bless this home.” During the blessing, we acknowledge that these doors are the gateways to our home, or a place that feels homelike, where we feel safe and comfortable. But doorways are not just the entry point to a place that is safe, but the place where we experience transition. Blessing doorways on Epiphany is therefore not only a time when we remember the visit of the Magi to visit the infant Jesus, but it is a time when we are invited to remember that we, too, are in a time of transition as we leave behind one calendar year and begin a new year.

As we stand before our blessed doorways in the new year of 2022, we are invited to recognize the ways that we are in transition and to embrace new transitions moving forward. This may be as drastic as moving to a new place, or it might be the interior change of recognizing that we need to work on something within ourselves. May we know the blessing of God in all parts of our life in 2022, especially those parts where we experience transition.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine

a woman looking into the distance with a mountain in the background

Mary’s “yes” to the angel when told she was favored and chosen to bear the Son of God inspires us by its simple consent and its leap of faith into an uncertain future. We realize she couldn’t fully know or understand all the other things that would come her way because of her “yes.” Mary trusted God.

None of us when discerning our future path knows for certain that our decision is the right choice for us because there is no way to know the unknown. It is all about our willingness to trust God, who loves us. When we have done our best to listen to what the Holy Spirit has in mind for our lives, we step onto the path, continuing to trust in God’s love as we move forward.

Allow yourself extra time to welcome silence into your life. Silence is God’s best way to communicate. Our listening and really hearing is best done in silence too.

May you be still enough to hear the still, small whispers of God, who loves you.

Sister Tarianne
